I'm getting a new engine under warranty.

Post by matthew.lewis2 » Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:04 am

Well, further to my recent posts, the Audi Master technician has just given me a telephone call to explain what he has done.

After running the compression test it was found that one cylinder was slightly down on compression. That combined with my statement that the RS4 consumes oil, Audi have decided that I need a new engine under warranty. Endoscope inspection did not reveal any major issue causing the low compression.

Unfortunatley, this was ascertained before the inlet manifold was removed, so we won't know what state my inlet was in.

The new engine arrives in two weeks time. Needless to say, I shall be fitting whatever solution MRC arrive at to combat the carbon deposits within a few miles of the new engine being installed.

I do have one question, what does a new engine comprise? Is it new block, new inlet manifold, new injectors, new plugs etc?

I would have thought the block & head(s) including all the respective internals of each. I'd certainly be asking the question though.

I wonder if Audi will supply a reconditioned unit, the same as Porsche do, when one of their engines capitulates?

When I use to work for Renault (and I’m still in therapy) there were various examples available; it would normally be up to the Area Manager to make the decision as short motors were £500-£1000 and full new motors could be £5k and this was 25 years and for a Renault so it would be worth asking the question. As Audi will be providing the unit and paying the dealer for his time it would normally be which ever is the quickest for the dealer to install (hopefully the full new motor)

Be good to hear what their response is, would you mind posting the answer

More lickly to be an oil scraper ring on the piston/unit in question - wouldn't know until stripped down and I doubt that Audi will give you any feedback on removed engine.
Good to here your getting it fixed though.
Maek sure they restart your (3 year) warranty for engine.

This is the dealership in Dubai and the car had 24,500 miles on the clock. Serviced at every 15,000km's as is the standard schedule over here.

Would they really restart the warranty on the engine?

No. I'd expect them to only honour the new parts for the remaining duration of the existing warranty.
Your original warranty was provided on the basis the whole car was new and crucially you paid for the warranty as part of the car purchase.

Bargain! My C55 needed a new engine when it inhaled some flood water and bent a couple of rods, the new lump was going to be 25k, and a 4 month wait, plus another 5k for new exhausts and cats....it got written off, obviously.

When I had my engine replaced under warranty, it was a brand new unit, including head and injectors etc. The engine is "warrantied" for 2 years regardless of the main warranty, exactly the same as when the brake discs are replaced. They just refer to it as "2 years parts and labour" but it's the same level of cover.

The reason I know this is that I'm selling mine with 2 years warranty on the engine and brakes - Nice to have on an 06 plate...

A loss of compression, i wonder what might be causing that.......

Matt - did you feel there was a fault or did you just want peace of mind following the recent threads on here?

Well your statement is contrary to every other experience I've known with main dealers and manufacturers, but I'f that's what you'v been advised then that can only be good news.
So long as you have a written statement to substantiate this, then I'd trust them somewhat to hold firm to it.

Couldn't feel a thing! I had the usual occasional hesitancy on some mornings, but nothing noticable. The investigation was for pure peace of mind (thgought of it as a free health check) before progressing with decats and remap. Im Bl00dy glad I did now. Can't imagine they would have been so kind with decats and a remap on there.

I shall be getting them to run full tests on the new lump before I take it back. The service agent said its a new engine, but inlets, injectors, plugs, ancilaries etc. are existing.

As well as thanking the speed and profesionalism of the service agent and mastertech, I rasied a query with my contact (who is the M.D. of Audi Middle East), asking whether it would be new or re-conditioned. When he gets back to me I shall also pose the same question about what is the extent of a new engine.

The cold start hesitancy is a possible sign of injector problems - which seems to be more prevalent on B7 RS4's than coil problems. A leaking injector could have been what washed the cylinder bore and led to the poor seal in that cylinder. To stick a complete new engine in the car, but use the existing injectors (without doing a simple leak-down test on them first) would be ridiculous.
