RS4 versus C63

Post by Les » Wed Apr 22, 2009 1:38 pm

Just thought I'd share this with you guys:

Was speaking to an ex RS4 owner yesterday who now has a new C63 merc.
I told him I am picking my RS4 up on Saturday morning and he said that whilst the C63 is an awesome machine, he finds himself regularly wishing that he still had his RS4.
Mainly I think because of the number of times when the surface is either damp or wet and the merc struggles to put its power on the road.

He sounded like he really does miss the RS4 and said I would absolutely love the car :D :D :D

Can't wait till Saturday morning now 8)

C63? AMG? Black? No chance if it's a black series I'm afraid, that thing will move mountains ala Shamen.

By the sounds of it that's the lucky owners point - The Black just has too much power for damp/wet roads.

Like the OP said, only if it's dry - in the wet you will be going nowhere!

The C-class does not come in Black Series, just "regular" 63 AMG

Maybe, maybe not, they still put there power down beautifully but admittedly they are a handful in the wet. In the dry, completely different story so it's swings and roundabouts really literally :D

As I read it we are talking about a 'regular' C63, wasn't the black a CLK?. Anyway, having had AMG's for several years (albeit 55's not 63's) I would agree about getting the power down, especially on take off or out of tight corners and roundabouts. I have no regrets about moving to the RS4, it's a far more focused car and feels far more special to drive.

That's a CLK yes and i know that. BUT the story was about a C!

But let's not argue more about that! In the dry it's all bye-bye RS4, no doubt!

That was my biggest problem with my mapped 335, couldn't put the power down in the wet, I just love the RS4, for the way it puts the power down

Funnily enough, the B7 is still quicker round the 'Ring than the CLK 63 Black...7:59 versus 8:02...if you're bothered by that kind of thing.

Its also faster than the C63 @ 8:13

No question about the C63 performance on the STRAIGHT dry track...

It is, however, about the only Merc I quite fancy a go in...I wouldn't turn down a go in a SL65 if I'm honest...Black or otherwise...

I think you will find that it is not Bye Bye RS4. Surely you all remember when Top Gear took the RS4, M3 and C63 to Spain and tested them, including a circuit of a track.
It was a clear sunny day and the C63 and RS4 posted identical times :!:
It was the M3 that proved quickest by 5 seconds if I remember rightly :!:

Perhaps not as clear an advantage in the dry as some may think and add to that the "ring" stats and you begin to wonder :?:

All cracking cars though :D

As an ex owner of an RS4 which I owned from new for nearly 3 years I have an unbiased view and opinion of the RS4 and my new toy -C63 AMG
The RS4 was a fantastic car, well built, quick, sure footed, reliable (apart from DRC) and I loved every minute of it, but it was time to move on and have a look around.

I drove the new M3, S5, M5, M6 and C63 and out of all of those cars the only car that gave me a sense of occasion and made me smile was the C63 - the sound is awsome (in my opinion better than the RS4 - which was lovely anyway). It is quicker than the RS4 but not massively - there is one section of road near where I live which is approx qtr mile and I go get another 4 MPH (Gps verified) from the C63. Reevesroadster on this forum lives the next road down so I will get him out for a spin in his car and see how they compare and let you know.

The interior doesnt feel quite as special but it's well made and the seats are bloody excellent - like to RS4 but more comfortable.

Now for the downsides.....

Yes, traction is a problem if it's anything other than dry but to be honest once on the move if you feather the throttle as opposed to stamping on it its not too horrendous!! Stamp on it though and the traction control light will be flashing at upto 70 mph!!!!!!!! (M25 last week when raining)

The ride is firmer (I have the performance pack - LSD, Firmer suspension, slightly differnet brakes and alcantara s/wheel).

MPG - not that you buy a car like this and worry about it but its <beep>.... Luckliy I get a company fuel card - if not a Prius would be on my driveway lol (NOT).

One thing that has changed though which is a good guide is that I frequently got out for a spin (literally) and I do have more fun in the C63 because you can!!!!!!!!!!

Well I still have a massive interest in RS4's hence still being on the forum and I hope you all enjoy yours like I did mine.

Darryl
