How big IS the fuel tank on a B7 RS4?

Filled up at Tesco yesterday with 15 miles range showing (with my average of 16mpg that means about 4 litres left in the tank), and got 66 litres in...

That makes a total of 70 litres, I thought we were supposed to have "only" 63 litre tanks (63 on quattro B6/B7 A4s and 70 on FWD B6/B7 A4s)?

At zero miles the car still runs ... I have done that on more than one occasions...

The extra fuel overflows into the DRC system - which we know causes all sorts of problems.

Max fill I've managed was 65 litres, display was zero for 45 miles. Not been brave enough (or stupid) to push any further

IIRC is there not a reserve chamber somewhere? I have also been on zero, travelled on zero for 20 miles, filled up and got 68 litres in by using the toggle inside the filler nozzle twice for 10 seconds a time. Thus maybe 65l by overfilling the '63' litre tank and a 5 litre reserve chamber or what is in the fuel lines?

BTW if I brim the tank so there is fuel in the nozzle and then pull on the toggle for 10 seconds I can get another 4-5 litres in the tank.

Er, I should know, exactly!!

I left home with the car showing 10 miles on an exactly 20 mile journey and 300 yards from the end of the 20 mile journey I ran out of juice and was stranded at a set of traffic lights in the middle of Trafford Park, Manchester!! Doh. The 20 mile journey was supposed to take me to the petrol station...........

So, moral of the story: If your wife was the last person to drive the car, and she left it with an indicated 10 miles remaining on the range indicator, it is NOT possible to then get 20 miles of NORMAL driving out of the remenants of the tank!!

And this was only Tuesday last week.

First year or two of the B6 had 66l tanks on the quattro. I know it doesn't help the RS4 but its useful on my 03 S4!

The reason why you can fill, up more after you have just filled up 63 litres and waited 10 seconds is because about 2 litres of it just ran out the overflow pipe at the top of your tank, you should never over fill your tank as you loose, some pertol which in turn makes you loose money!

The tank is exactly too small and the engine too thirsty.

But it sounds great and goes great. Just a bum watching all those petrol attendents rubbing their hands with glee.

So where does the overflow pipe go? Because you would notcie 4-5 litres of fuel being spewed on to the forecourt which is what I can get in it after brimming and then using the toggle in the fuel nozzle. In reality I believ that toggle is an air release valve in the tank. When I brim it, if I do not use this method the needle never touched full when I start the car up. If I do employ this method then it will reach the full marker.

There is an overflow but as you say, you would notice it. Remember that depending on what angle the car is at you may manage to get all the air out of air pockets at the top of the tank.

Not the same but this happened in my jetski and as it had a clear tank I could see the pockets of air, I could get another 2 gallons in by filling it carefully.

The G-Spot....

Remove fuel cap, have a feel inside on left side, there is a little lever, push it and if the tank is full and it is very quiet, you can hear the fuel and air

No petrol ran out onto the forecourt, I would have smelt and seen it when I came back to the car after paying - and there was none.
