Anyone had coil pack failure (yet)?

Post by rjkflyer » Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:41 pm

Got the engine warning lamp on today and a quick check with Ross-Tech VCOS shows ECU number 2 reporting a random/multiple misfire and a specific misfire detected on cyl 4. Car running fine however.

Dealer confirms that it sounds like a coil pack - obv in process of failing or intermittent.

Wondered of experience of others? Only done 17k...

You're lucky to get 17K! Mine failed even before I took delivery. The dealer rang when I was on my way to pick it up and said EPC light came on and diagnosed with coil pack failure. They changed all 8 before I took delivery.

I've done nearly 27K miles with no sign of coil pack failure.

Talking to the Mobile tech (a good and new idea for my dealer - man comes to your car at home and fixes it where possible) doesn't seem to be a big issue with RS4. Seem to have been some revisions to coil packs so the later ones are pretty reliable.

To be fair, the VDCS indicated a once-off intermittent fault so replacement was precautionary but done under warranty.

i've had 3 replaced, but you should check, there is an open recall for early 07's, fuel pressure sensor, my car was cutting out like a bad cp, same symptom, and having had 3 replaced, i assumed it'd be my fourth, but it was the fuel pressure sensor...ck your VIN at your shop for open campaigns...

That's interesting - i was aware that mine needed the low pressure fuel sensor recall (the tech confirmed that - it's an early '06) but didn't know it could be a possible cause of poor running which i guess might have tripped the ECU.

Hmmm, car in dealer for DRC repair (again) and they advised they had changed a coil pack as ECU indicated a Cylinder 4 misfire. EXACTLY same error as i started this thread with.

Bit odd to have same failure twice (although no actual misfire evident). Anyone else seen this? Must suggest something else perhaps? ANy ideas?

(Have posted details on VAG-COM forum)
