I think so. It reset the benchmark for non supercar performance.

Maybe but production numbers too many for real classic staus like Lotus Carlton, RS2's and even RS4 B5's which are slowly creeping into the 'classic' category.

Too common to be a classic.

If all cars become smaller engined then i think it would. Last of the v8s etc.

I think it was left off deliberately

Is the M3 a future classic? I doubt it, maybe the CSL.

I think it's a genuine comment, or at least I'd tend to agree...

It's not an immediate classic by virtue of design or innovation (unlike say the original iPod, Bic Crystal, Eames chair etc.) and in the medium term it's volume would prevent it being a classic by virtue of rarity

I think it will continue to be a very desirable car, and a benchmark for performance, looks, build etc. People will still want one in the future, but does that make it a classic??

Do numbers produced really impact on something being a classic, or just impact its value when it becomes one?

How many E-types/TR6s are out there, for example? Loads, but they're still classics, right?

I think it is too mass-produced to be a classic and it also looks too much like a regular A4 to be one.

Really?

In the first 6 months of ownership at least one occupant in most cars that I passed or passed me could be seen to look and point, and lip reading usually revealed something like "Look, Dad/Mum/brother/friend, an RS4!"

The differences are subtle and not "in your face" but visible enough for most people to see at a glance.

Mini
Morris Minor
Beetle
Capri
Escort RS 2000
The numbers produced dont mean a thing.
The comment "too common" apart from being factually incorrect is just not relevant.
As I said above if manufacturers have a sudden change in heart about large engined cars then I think it will. The B7 rs4 was/is a mile stone in large engined sports saloons. The e92 M3 is living proof that audi got it right and bm got it wrong. 57 plate m3s are now on a par price wise with 07 rs4s in fact a lot have dipped below 40k. Not saying it will stay that way but at the mo it looks better for an rs4.

As I said, classic by virtue of design or innovation. I love my RS4, but in "Classic" terms the ones above are in a different league...

Exactly, it's the second gen of the RS4 and undoubtedly won't be a classic like the original B5 Avant. Plus the numbers of B5's makes them even more exclusive than the more mass produced, three model B7 (Saloon,Avant and Cab)

I also think the classic Quattro and Forced induction combination which Audi are World famous for keeps the B5 more in the "classic" category as the V8 whilst great as it is, it's too new and too temporary a solution. I can see a complete turnaround on the large engined fast Audi's in the future in favour for the smaller engined forced indution units.
