This may interest some of you if thinking of trading in your lovely V8s in a car hating environment.

As some of you may know, I was considering making a move to the other side and for the last couple of days have had a fully loaded 2 month old A5 whilst mine in the dealership and they have now made me an offer of a straight swap against mine give or take a few quid. Mine being a 12k 1 year old Avant. Now my accountant ...AKA the missus has done some maths along with getting some depreciation figures from a reputable finance company and i was somewhat surprised. Firstly the depreciation figures make the RS4 residuals some 20% stronger than the A5 even in this current crap climate. This was based on max 12k a year and 1 year age difference etc over the next 2 - 3years. The running costs with 20 mpg against 30 mpg and v power against diesel cost, tax and the like works out as only approx £50 quid a month more for the Rs 4. A lot over a year yes agreed but when you add in the deprecation figures and put this together it actually makes sense to stick with big boy! :D Now clearly this will depend on life style, mileage for each of our individual lives but can I ask if any one else has got an opinion on this or done some similar calculations to perhaps help me make my mind up! I’ve got till 5 oclock !!! Which is helping me is the A5 is a lovely car and I am seriously tempted by it.

I should think that the RS4 residuals have always been pretty strong, but cars will be cars, and eventually depreciation will catch up. From what we can see, the prices of petrol anywhere in the world aren't going anywhere but up, so if you feel the pinch every time you put your foot down or fill up, then the A5 3.0 would be a sensible option.

From the perspective of performance, the A5 is nowhere close to the RS4, but no one can guarantee the residuals over the next 1 to 3 years, or the price of petrol. If cost of maintenance and fuel is a concern, the A5 would be the logical bet.

That said, if you can afford the fuel prices and rack this up as a hobby (I don't smoke, drink, club or do drugs, just into cars), I would park my happy dollars with my RS4 and keep driving it.

What are their values for both cars please give full spec ?

Have you given another Audi dealership the chance to quote ?

Don't like the 'make your mind up by 5pm' threat i bet if you don't ring them by then they'll ring you back within 48 hours !

I'd be tempted to tell them you have seen another car, say a BMW or Merc, DON'T tell them any more other than you have been offered a better p/x for yours and you're seriousy thinking about it.

I'll wager they'll ask you to come back and see them and look at the figures again !

The worst thing you can do is let a car salesman think you REALLY want the car he has for sale.

If money is an issue and it is for 99.9% of us on here i suspect then you've got to go for the car that is going to cost you less, overall, over the next few years.

Your car, even in this current climate, is still very desirable when you look at the price of the RS6, they may even have a punter who has been looking for a mint Avant

like yours ready to buy it hence the offer after you had left it at the dealership, so as the punter could have a look at yours, they could give him a figure on his

swopper and agree to sell it to him if your deal goes through.

Ah ha good point !! To be fair I wouldn’t let them bully me and I am prepared to walk away at any point the reason I had 5pm is when i have to give the car back to pick mine up but just told them im doing it tomorrow. The A5 i have is a demo and not on the forecourt but they can sell it and for as long as i have it in my sticky mitts then no one else can see it theoretically speaking. The figures I don’t mind offering was mine 40k + 1k cash for the A5 which I though was high but equally a good PX on mine compared to some quotes from dealerships ive heard. The A5 has 19 inch y alloys, driver damper steering adjustment thingy, full sat nav + and low phone, comfort pack, ipod and B+O stereo, and the sport trip tronic flappy paddle gear changing wotsit which is rare apparently MMI. So well speced I though…. But 41k? Audi on the phone now !!! LOL ! ï

Hey get me a nice job in Dubai and ill personally bring it over for you !! But then the issue of petrol prices evaporate so to speak and I might want to keep it ! Seriously though didnt realise you couldnt import an Avant into UAE?

If you love driving the RS4 will always be more desirable than the A5.

If you need an Avant, then the A5 isn't even an option.

The only thing that would make the A5 win is if you do LOTS of miles (and 12K in a year in the RS4 says you don't).

Stick with the RS4 Avant.

Nothing like foreplay hey guys to get em going!! I called Audi and told them I thought the A5 was a nice car but expensive and sliding residuals against the 4 and he didnt even argue told me everytthing so once again not only shows the quality of the car we have but also being able to discuss it with people on this quality forum. Yes Jim :) I know a bit naughty those alloys hence another reason why the ex is now the ex !!! SS+ to your taste?? Any idea where i can get them done and the phone thing off the dash as well? Was it someone craig? Cheers Im off for a much missed spirited blast !!

Well done on keeping the RS4 - much sounder choice and to be honest if it is an extra £50 quid/month or so to run it then I would quite happily swap to cheaper food brands and start living on spam.

If the price of fuel gets any higher I'm either going to cycle more or live off spam - as this girl is here to stay.
