Graunching noise at full lock

I get a graunching noise and sensation through the wheel when on full lock at very low speeds. It feels like one wheel is losing grip, almost as if I'm on snow. Any ideas what this could be - problem with the front diff maybe?

Its exactly as legal says, wheels loosing traction. A cars wheels when turned follow different paths so as not to trip each other up, when they are at full lock they are on slightly different curves so one is pushing the other forward, the noise you here is the wheel breaking traction and slipping over the road surface. Its more pronounced on low profile rubber, my old boxster on 19s sounded horrible.

I took my car to Audi Cardiff yesterday with a view to getting this sorted out.

Of course, when I got there, I could not recreate the symptoms.

Master Technician came out with me but did advise that he'd "check the system" as it was a familiar complaint with the RS4/A4 chassis.

Call today to say there are modified parts to fit to my car which will sort the problem.

So if you've got the same symptoms, you might want to check with your dealer to see if they've got the same info on the solution.

Thumbs up Audi.

Quizzed him on the "smoking on start up" issue and he says they almost all do it but it isn't something to worry about. Their dealership cars do it but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when they do it.

Very curious.

I have had the same problem "master technician" says "they all do that sir" but it wasn't there for the first 4 months of ownership. I live a long way from the dealership so will have to live with it for a while and try again.

Could this be encouraged by tyres that are on their way out i.e. more surface contact?

This has happened to me twice now, both times from cold. The first time, it felt like I had a flat tyre and I actually got out to check the front. I dont think its a major issue, my tyres have done 13K miles and a track day, so due for replacement soon. Im planning on mentioning it to the dealer at service time, but expect the "thats normal, sir" response.

There was an issue with bottom arms which were wearing and causing noise on full lock then progressing to noise at all times, I know both side on mine were replaced and the problem never happened since.

Interesting, I thought it was just the Torsen diff locking up on hard turns thus the inside tyre slipping on the lock, so there is a fix??

Mine has just started doing it, thought it felt like a soft tyre, it wasn't so i put it down to the cold weather.

only done 4k miles, will get the dealer to check next time I am passing.

Was about the sort of mileage mine started doing it.

I also had this, never really concerned me as I thought it was the harsh angle of the tyres slipping on the road.

so to summarise, the cure is replacement of front bushes for an alternative part as this is part of an official recall?
