I downloaded a couple of tunes from itues and went to convert them to mp3 only to have a warning sign come up saying they are protected. Does this mean all itunes purchased music cant be converted or is there a way to disable the protection?

You'll need to burn the tunes to CD, the rip the MP3s from that. Awkward, but its the only way I know of.

You can also pay a bit more for the super hi-quality 320kb/s version which are free of protection (iTunes started doing this a few months ago) - much better for converting directly to MP3 as there's less loss of quality. (and less fannying about).
