The wet and the dark - two little things....

Just been out for my first proper drive in the dark and, as it has been raining all day where I am, it's very wet everywhere.
First thing I notice is how great the car feels in these conditions, really surefooted and inspiring confidence - great.
But then I notice a couple of little niggles.
i) at low (ie quiet) revs/speed the wipers make a loud thumping noise at both extremes of their travel; and ii) the red light around the start button is very bright to the point of being something of a distraction eveytime I change gear and it becomes visible in my peripheral vision making it appear like a bright red flash each time.
So, anybody else notice/suffer with the same things and shoudl the starter button light even be on? Once the car is started why do I need it to be illuminated?
Any thoughts, comments welcome.
Cheers
