Goodwood track day. Well, morning

A quick post to say I took my B7 'vert to Goodwood yesterday and was really impressed with the setup and the whole morning was very relaxed, with some nice people there and some very decent metal including a Porsche Speedster and several McClarens.

Only 8-10 cars on track for 15 minute stints all morning - so at a push you can get 1h 15 on track.

My RS was 1 of 2 Audi's there, the other being a V10 R8 and I like to think we held our own interns of presence and ability.
The R8 looked quick - I was only passed by an F430 and one of the McClaren, but took a couple of 996's and Brand new boxter T.

Thoroughly recommend it if you have £180 and a morning to spare. Good standard of vehicle overall, aside from a questionable Focus RS (as in looked like Halfords had thrown up on it).

During my track time, I averaged 10.1 mpg over 41 miles. Car almost 15 years old, did not miss a beat and got a lot of attention from onlookers.

Definitely. As it was damp/raining for some of the morning the Quattro had a small advantage in the corners and slalom, however the tyres on my car are not the best so I will need to change them to Michelin or Pirellis for better grip.

The track is fast but quite sympathetic on brakes as only only really 1 major anchors corner, but 80 mile (gentle) journey to the track each way, plus 40 miles on track generated a visual brake dust equivalent of about 350-400 miles of 'normal' driving. That also did for a tank full or fuel! I had to refuel 30 miles into my journey home, so 150 miles for 7/8 of a tank...
Tyres did not suffer too much as far as I can see, so need to try harder!

Going back early February.

Really good to hear you had a great time.

I can completely relate, I took my car to the track a few months ago (Ipswich, Queensland) and was blown away by how well the car went.

Course is harder on the brakes by the sound of it as mine had smoke coming off them after one session, but like you the brake dust was unreal haha.

congrats, sounds like a great morning out.

i've been to goodwood a few times - always in something with the engine behind the rear axle rather than ahead of the front. i've never dared to take the rs4 as its always been summer time and i've assumed that the tires and brakes wouldn't take the heat so well and curtail fun.

out of interest what sort of speeds were you getting at the end of the straight before you have to jump on the brakes, would been into 5th and still pulling nicely ?

I was focused on the track and brake points so didn’t keep much of an eye on speed, but I am assured by my pal that I went past him at 120 mid way up the long straight a corner before the chicane. So possibly touching 125-130

I did get a whiff of brake heat during one session but no fade - good wood allows a fair amount of speed to be carried so only jumped hard on the anchors for that corner. Tyre wear was hardly noticeable with little squeal - I probably wasn’t trying hard / wasn’t brave enough! Also it was damp with intermittent showers-

Next session - Covid allowing - will be 6th Feb

that sounds fantastic.

the shell building gets close very quickly at 130mph into the braking area, and in the damp as well!

nice to see these cars are still holding their own after a few years.
enjoy your feb trip, very envious.
