Gear knob insert

Post by amdaman » Mon Nov 27, 2017 10:07 am

Hi - does anyone know if the gear knob insert can be removed easily? The ring from the previous owner has scratched mine quite bad and I'd like to get it resprayed!

Thanks

Got bored of waiting so I took a flat head screw driver to it and prised it off. Needed a bit of force so I put some cloth under it so I didn't damage the leather (needs refurbishing anyway). Looks like the gear knob can be easily taken off this way too with the two screws as shown below.

I'm getting an alloy refurbished next week so I'll use the silver from that. Hopefully it turns out OK.

Maybe soda blast it, much finer. Looking at the back of your nob insert, it may well look good untreated. I'm gonna get mine done too. I've used Pennys in Cov, they do all sort of blasting and finishes. I may go for gloss or mat black.

Heres what the leather bit looks like when you remove the two screws. There's a service on ebay that restores these for £30 with semi perforated leather!

Forgot to post the finished product. The insert isn't perfect but much better than before;

Looks like a good job. When you say not perfect, colour match or finish?

The finish, there are still some marks on the insert that weren't properly sanded out. The colour looks fine but there's nothing else silver in the interior to compare it against really. I got it done the same colour as my wheel refurbish (Oem).

The semi perforated leather refurb is spot on. That was only £30!
