Exhaust experimentation

So my next project on the car will be getting the exhaust note correct. To do this I have decided to go down the 'modify the standard exhaust route'. The main reason behind this is because I want to keep the car as stock as possible, I want to keep the valves, and I like to do a little experimentation with these sorts of things. The plan is to remove the central resonator and try out straight through, H and X pipe and see which one I like the best.

To do this I have now managed to amass 3 standard exhaust systems (the Mrs is over the moon with the new 'garden ornaments'). I'll have each one made and then carry out a sound comparison. The winner will be the one that makes me smile the most.

I know that some of you have already done various versions of these mods so I'm happy to take any pointers. From what I've seen the X pipe is the mod which has the most variation on the design. From what I read this seems to be the correct way of doing it. Again any pointers would be much appreciated. Work starts in a weeks time.

Looking forward to reading about the process and hearing the results!!

I love a good comparison test.

You have a great responsibility now though. "What's better - straight, a H or X?" Is one of the more frequently asked questions on here, along with "which tyres?", "should I carbon clean?", "brake discs are how much? Can't I just use a biscuit tin lid instead?", "can Mike Fish score me an ounce?", "what's wrong with BamBam?" and "what does Chunky's Mum look like?"

You can put this one to bed (the straight/X/H thing - not Chunky's Mum").

May I suggest a video at the end of this comparing the sounds in a variety of scenarios? Would be very interesting.

No pressure then, I'd best get myself a go-pro or some other recording device!

And how is it that every thread on this forum features a mention of Chunky's mum? Perhaps BamBam can elaborate?

For me the stock exhaust with valves open has to be one of the best sounding v8 engine notes around.

I think the trick will be to enhance the stock valve open volume like 15-20% but maintain that deep throaty tone and not get that raspy thing happening that most people end up with.

Keen to see how you go!

I'm interested in this too, what pipes exactly do you have in mind?

I was looking at these:

Basically that (above) will be the H pipe set up. The fabricator will remove the centre resonator and then fabricate the H pipe section in the Shop.

From what I read the straight through and H pipe setups should do this, whilst the x-pipe tends to give a slightly more high pitched, exotic sound. Looking forward to the testing phase. Hoping to get the straight through and x-pipe done on Sat. My not have time to get the H done as well this weekend.

Cause bum_bums a hairy front bottom.

Has anyone on here got an RS4 that sounds like a yank V8 and not a rasping V8?
