Finally picked up the car, overall very happy BUT either i am not used to the car or something is wrong? nothing too serious i hope, someone has said that the boxes are a little clunky anyway so maybe its that. Basically when changing gears in my mind it seems a little un smooth / clunky at the rear, my thoughts are the diff but what do i know, Their is no wine or noise from what i can tell and it drives ok its just not what i would consider smooth. ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

The valves have already been disconnected when i got the car so i thought i may as well try removing the center box and straight pipe it before spending out on exhaust systems, BUT the garage i have it booked in with for Tuesday has told me not to do this as it will uneven the flow, he recommended x pipe only. I AM NO MECHANIC, so have to go with his advice i guess as its hard to find anyone to do it anyway. I assume i will still have noticeable sound difference ?

Cant comment on the clunking but the exhaust can be straight, h or x pipe. The standard one has a open in the resonators between the 2 sides

Don't listen to your garage. The standard exhaust is seperated all the way through and does not join in the centre resonator so straight pipes will not uneven the flow in any way. Mines been like that as have many others for a long time with no side effects.

X-pipe will be better but if you insist on straight pipes, it won't do any damage/unbalance anything. As Mike said, they are straigh from factory and many owner run them.
As for the noises you are hearing, check rear diff mount, gearbox mount and engine mounts..

Yes as you say Mike knows his stuff and has been very helpful, i think i might just go with the x pipe simply because not only did the garage recomend this BUT looking on you tube where the systems are explained, i do understand why it may be better to even out the gas flow into both outlets rather than seperatly, the H pipe is a no go for me that just doesn't look like an option for me anyway and yes my heart was on straight pipes but sod it x pipe it is. ROLL ON TUESDAY lol, or at least i hope so as it better make a difference sound wise

another thing to note is all x pipes are not created equal, i have seen some x pipes on here that are probably more restrictive than the standard center section.
you want a smooth long "X", no sharp bends not to much crossover. a well designed x pipe will help a NA v8 breath.

Even more reason to stick with straight pipes. I really can't see there being any notocable difference for the more complex x pipe arrangement. Audi decided to keep the pipes separate in the centre resonator so that is good enough for me.

while i agree expecting random exhaust Shop A to throw in a "off the top of their head" x pipe design isn't going to increase power over just straight pipes, the benefits of a good x pipe(read that as many hours of design, many prototypes and dyno testing) on a v8 really are not up for debate. it has been proven time after time on american muscle and even on our rs4's.

as for what audi decided to do as being good enough for you, you didnt agree with their choice of sound system, or the wheels, or the...........

Ha I knew someone would say that... yes I have different tastes but none of those changes made it any faster. They generally got most things right with the B7 in terms of maximising output from that engine.
And I was going to add that a proper designed and tested x pipe could potentially make an improvement but as you pointed out, these are not designed or tested, just thrown together.

LET ME THROW A SPANNER IN THE WORKS HERE, i was originally going to fit a cat back non res milltek, now on that basis this exhaust would have been supplied with straight pipe option ???? im bloody confused now wtf lol

mate i have no problem with anyone unless they have one with me, ive not posted anything before regards an x pipe ? and to be fair i wasnt getting one, when i booked my car in to have a straight pipe mod done the garage said im better off having an x pipe, this was only saturday just gone so as i had no idea i thought i would ask what others have, so it seems its you who has an issue with me? if you dont want to read my post dont no problem leave me be and i will leave you ok.
