Thinking of Selling

Post by kevconn » Tue Jan 17, 2017 4:03 pm

Well, after 12 months of ownership i'm considering (reluctantly) putting the RS4 up for sale once i've put it through it's MOT. I've only 7 years to go before i retire and after talking to the wife over the weekend we've decided we'd be better off using the one car between us and using the money from the sale of the RS to pay off the mortgage sooner.

I've wanted one of these for years and apart from a couple of unexpected bills along the way i've loved every minute of owning it and it's been everything i'd expected it would be. It's got Audi service history up to 54k with that last service a long life service and mostly specialist ever since. I had a specialist oil change service on the car when i first got it and it's been to Unit 20 3 times since then to have inlet manifold flaps done, a forge oil cooler and aux rad replaced. It's just done 89k, is in the BEST colour Sprint Blue and had 4 former keepers.

It drives like a dream, sounds the nuts with the Milltek and if i do actually sell it i know i'm going to be gutted. The market seems pretty strong for these at the moment so what could i reasonably expect to draw for it without being greedy?

Thanks.

That's what i thought as a minimum given the spec and condition and everything else out there. Would you just stick with trying to sell through the forum and wait for a buyer of risk getting messers through Autotrader, Ebay or Pistonheads?

Not having Bucket Seats will limit your market, so I'd advertise it on all the places you suggest.

I had mine up before Christmas for 2 month at 16k with full audi service history and 91000 on clock I needed the money for deposit on a house
Didn't get one call
The car needed nothing as just had major service at audi and new everything really with a 13k bill

I think it's falling on the right person at the right time it could take weeks even months to sell

Avus silver is not one of the sought after colours, needs the right person. Sprint blue is very popular though.

Thanks for all the replies, after speaking again to her indoors last night it's almost certainly going to be put up for sale once it's been Mot'd. We've also decided that we can't really get by with just the wifes car until we do actually retire so my next problem is what to buy to replace this that will be more economical but something that's not boring????

I do have a selling figure in mind but i think i'll take your advice and pitch it at £16k and go from there. At that figure with what's been spent on it in the last 12 months i'll be out of pocket but it's been a fantastic experience owning one of these awesome cars and i can confidently say that any potential owner would be buying a car that needs for absolutely nothing.

It's a shame you're letting it go!

Sounds like you're not in a rush though, so why start so low? £16k isn't far off cat-D territory

I would expect a well maintained, enthusiast owned example to do better than that.

You just have to expect that there's a very limited proportion of the population that would be mad enough to buy a 10 year old car with a massive V8; it will take time to sell. To rickster147's point, I think selling around Xmas is always going to attract fewer enquiries- there just aren't many people looking to buy a car at that time of year.

Thinking of Selling

Can I be honest here???

DONT sell.!
Clearly you already miss the car before it's even sold.
You will regret it and than will buy another one in years time anyways...
also how much of a mortgage can you pay of with a 16-18k? You are saving yourself what 2years?? 3 at most? Not worth it.
Don't listen to you wife! She clearly don't understand! She is pressuring you and you know it. If my wife was suggesting something like that I would be very polite to pointing out that she could be looking for a better job instead, if she wants that extra bit of disposable..
grab your balls! Hug your wife and tell her that: "darling, we are going to be alright with out selling RS! Trust me I am a pilot"

Tell me to <beep> off if I been an annoying little prick here.

Ps. If that's absolutely what you have to do, £19k and wait long and hard for the right buyer.!!

Lol, tbh it was me that put the proposition to her, my head (financially) is saying sell it but my heart says keep it another 12 months or so, so i'm definately not under any pressure from her and i'm the last person on earth that would sell just because the mrs said i had to, trust me!!! The cars is just approaching 89k and i've also got at the back of my mind that once they approach the 100k figure then that again affects the customer base for one of these, no matter how well it's been maintained.

We have 7 years outstanding on the mortgage and whacking 15-16k off will save us 3 years as you say, i've already looked into it. I'm definately not in a rush to sell it and i certainly won't be letting it go cheap. As i said, i've had some really nice cars over the years but this thing is on another level, there i go again, talking myself out of it haha.

Just a thought, in 12 months time and few extra "k" this car will probably be worth the same as today the way the prices are going at the moment.

If you pay your mortgage off a bit you will have more money each month.......great, can't drive around in money.

Enjoy today.

Obviously don't know your personal circumstances but I agree with the comments here and don't see that you're going to gain that much from selling at that price if you have to replace it. You'll probably spend £8-10k on something more economical and newer, but ultimately boring compared to the RS4. You've already spent quite a bit getting your car to a good standard, so it should be relatively reliable now.

In fact that cheaper car might actually cost you more; if it depreciates more than the RS4.

As daytonamart says, the RS will probably be worth around the same as today, in a year's time.
