Smoke on startup
Smoke on startup
I have spent hours of searching and still no definitive answer. Every cold start I get heaps of white smoke which is so rich in smell it can seriously burn your eyes.
The smell and smoke disappear within a minute. The car is garaged every night and sometimes not started until 2pm. So I believe that it cannot be condensation.
My old s3 had the same issue until I removed the SAI.
Has anyone had the same problem, removed the SAI and the problem disappeared?
Thanks,
Marty

so removing the SAI and blocking the holes made no difference to the smoke issue?
Did it change anything at all?

Re: Smoke on startup
My B7 used to do this. I took it into Audi twice to investigate Plugs, the oil manifold and any fuel issues - nothing conclusive.
Speaking with other owners this behaviour is not unusual and something to do what the start up 'over run' which is designed to heat the Cats up quickly. Levels and colour of smoke vary by car and conditions.
I just lived with it and it seemed to get no worse over 4 years of ownership.

Re: Smoke on startup
Try this - if you've been out in it (and it's obviously fully up to temperature). On the way home, like any good RS4 owner, give it a good bootfull a couple of times. I'm not saying drive it like you stole it, but a good couple trips up the rev counter. I've found it doesn't do it at all after this. If you trundle around in it and park it up, you'll find it'll do it. Not to mention, this'll contribute to carbon build up.
Re: Smoke on startup
To be honest with you, because I have no main cats, I figured this was the reason for smoking from cold anyways. Removing SAI did make it warm up slower. Sometimes I can drive for good 10min before oil up to 61deg...O3mrt wrote:pule333 wrote:Mine does the same. And I have removed SAI.

Re: Smoke on startup
I can definitely confirm that I don't get up when close to home, I'm still in the turbo frame of mind, drive off boost when close to turning the engine off.jaysrs4 wrote:Try this - if you've been out in it (and it's obviously fully up to temperature). I will give it a crack and report back.
Cheers

Ha ha my wife said to me last week: "how do I know that you gonna be home in next 5 min? Are you Revving your car on purposefully?" Lol my reply was, "just doing some maintenance love" ha ha

Re: Smoke on startup
Mine used to do this, but I have no cats. MRC sorted it out on my last service. I'll look on my receipt and post the fix tomorrow.

Re: Smoke on startup
Sorry but I'm so glad to read all this as mine does it also and I was starting to worry lol.
I also have no cats but I don't remember my last rs4 doing it.
I will try what Jay said also

Re: Smoke on startup
It's a known issue for cars with no pre cats. Mine started doing it the day I had my pre cats removed. I also had the SAI removed on the same day.
Re: Smoke on startup
MRC changed my Oil Separator and it stopped smoking. There always a little bit on start up, but no where near as before.

Re: Smoke on startup
Mine does it too but not massively, called MRC who said it's perfectly normal on a cold start, if it does it on hot starts then that's an issue.

Can 100% confirm that this works. Thank you sooooo much.jaysrs4 wrote:Try this - if you've been out in it (and it's obviously fully up to temperature).
