Alternator Issues

Had the wagon in the Shop, due to noise with alternator belt drive. Been advised I need a new alternator, as it looks like the bearing has gone. New alternator ex Germany is NZ$1000, about £600. Anyone here had theirs apart and know if its possible to replace bearings. Im being told its not, which seems a bit unusual.
