Flickering Headlights

Post by lushman » Sun Oct 16, 2016 12:47 pm

Looking some help with above title from a new owner, but a noob when it comes to problems :bash:

This does not happen everytime I drive the car. The sidelights had LED bulbs fitted which the garage deemed to be the cause of lights flickering when driving at night so were replaced with the standard ones. The car has DRL which last night when driving I turned it off and the flickering stopped. By flickering I mean the headlight beam appears to jump about which is very noticeable when driving behind a van for instance or like the car is cutting out which it is not.

Also I have just discovered the wash from the rear wipe is not spraying. The nozzles on the arm appear clear. Is there anything that jumps out why it wouldn't (reservoir has plenty of fluid in it)

Any advice most welcome

Flickering /on/off definitely try the bulbs - when you say jumping around I do wonder if is the adjuster motors or something inside the headlights.

Rear wash - my hose had split in two places at the right hand hinge where the tube enters the car and the leaks put paid to the boot handle + I would also expect the wiper motor. It is a fairly easy job to remove the rear trim but put aside an afternoon to unwind all the harness tape and locate the leaks - when I disconnected the tube at the wiper motor and blew down it it whistled !

I replaced mine with some rubber hose but I think it kinks a bit so am going to redo with the Audi hose when I have a spare afternoon (this has just reminded me to order the hose !)

Thanks MB2.

There does not appear to be any water in the car, but as I only really tried to clean the rear window at the weekend due to the awful weather there might not have been enough water escaping if it is a split hose. I will get someone to stand at the rear of the car with the tailgate open to see if they can hear the motor when I try to squirt the rear window :)

Also, check underneath the passenger side front wheel arch. I've had issues with the pipe there.

Whatever you do, do not try and use the rear washer until you've fixed it, as this happened to me and I ended up with washer fluid running down the hose and onto the motor, which burnt it out! Hopefully won't happen to you but just be cautious.

Good point! I would not have thought of that

Lights now sorted with the ones below as suggested - thanks for all the advice

http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/D1S-OS ... -Bulb.html

Flickering has now gone so far, but I suspect that's them sorted :)

A new wash pump was fitted in the rear which got the rear wipe squirting but in the process of it being fitted (not by me) the BOSE amp got wet and fried. This was been replaced by the garage.

I have now discovered the rear demister not working which again was probably due to the water when the pump was being fitted. Its the small things I find so annoying!

When will it ever end.........

Bad luck on the Bose. Check the hose too as mine had split where it enters the roof and the other side of the hinge - I was lucky was only the handle the water got to and an easy replacement. You can sort of tell by blowing down the connection as mine whistled and the cloth tape was absolutely sodden.

Audi sell the repair joints although I used micro irrigation joints with super glue & heat shrink for added security. If you need some of the tubing let me know as Audi only sell that in a ridiculous length so I will have some spare (at the moment I am using irrigation hose which works fine but can kink).
