Can't get gears

Post by chuckrs4 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 9:24 pm

Alright guys, was driving last night and my clutch pedal feeling not quite right and selecting gears was not smooth 3rd to 4th and today gave it a bit of beans off a roundabout and the clutch wouldn't engage. Tried searching on here, the pedal didn't stick down and the clutch ain't slipping, had to do the good old revs and get the gear to get home. Thought the pedal box might have gone like vw's but can't see anything. Any ideas? Cheers

Hello mate,
My first thought would be the master cylinder if you reckon the pedal didnt feel right.

Are you able to select gears with the engine off?

Has it been ok since or is it still unable to engage gears with the engine running?

I dont think its the common clutch sticking issue, but worst case is the slave cylinder in the bell housing.... :-(

Clutch is fine on it though, Unless it's the pressure plate has failed. Don't think it's the slave as there is no fluid at the bottom and the pedal still has resistance just not enough to engage a gear.

release bearing maybe forced through p/plate?-spring broke on friction plate/jammed?
once you have checked hydraulics/externals are fine it would be box off next to investigate/fit new assy/fly

I didn't have any symptoms of a clutch failure either but was finding it tricky to engage 1st & reverse. Replaced clutch & flywheel and it is now perfect. The RS4 clutch has a self-adjusting mechanism, and once you reach the end of the adjustment, it's time for replacement.

I'm getting it all priced up for the bits now. Another thing when the clutch pedal is pressed slightly you feel quite a vibration coming through the pedal.

Just short of £1500 for all parts from tps but that's not with trade discount, so should be a bit less.

You can get an OEM LUK DMF077 dual mass flywheel from www.rockauto.co.uk shipped from the States for about £400 inc VAT and customs. IIRC the TPS price for the DMF alone was £760+VAT.

That's super cheap for the dmf. Is it a long turn around to get it? What about other parts? Thought you'd get a clutch kit from tps but it's seperates. Clutch and pressure plate are 125ish each and slave 73ish retail. Any help for sourcing parts would be ideal. Cheers

I went with the LUK clutch kit from Eurocarparts, and Sachs slave & master cylinders from same place (they regularly do 30% discount codes). I then went to TPS for all the ancillary bits and the DMF from Rockauto as above.

The delivery from Rockauto was about 1 week, there's quite a few forum members have used them. It's a no-brainer at half the Audi price.

Think mine might need doing again it's only done 25k, had flywheel and clutch replaced but it's to the stage where the pedal needs to be pressed right to the floor before any clutch is engaged and the Bite is right at the bottom. I'm disappointed if it is a new clutch as I've never launched the car, only accelerated hard once moving and that's not often either

Took similar approach; all LUK parts from partsgeek, installs in 1-2 weeks and all parts delivered under $580, flywheel, clutch plate/disc and bearings. Way cheaper than anticipated.

Is there a separate clutch fork off the slave onto the release bearing on these setups?
