Bleeding ABS pump

Post by jonytek » Thu Sep 22, 2016 2:42 pm

So long story short I pushed air through the brake lines while bleeding them and now there zero pressure. I've been informed that the ABS pump may need bleeding. I just spoke to AMD and they seem to think I'll be fine with just bleeding the lines again and no need to do the pump - I don't have Vagcom.

Has anyone been through this before??

Hmm that is a strange advice from AMD. I always thought once the air gets inside the Pump, the only way to pump it out is use Vagcom to circulate the pump.. they might know something we don't. The only problem is that brake fluid is not cheap. So you could try doing it again but if doesn't work you are left with no fluid again.

That's right. And no car to go pick up more fluid. I was thinking of ordering more off amazon. I might have look now.

But yeah, Amd said you don't need to do the pump on the B7. That's why I was asking, everywhere online says you need vagcom.

Oh ive done it..... all too easy if you dont keep your eye on the resevoir level when bleeding.
The only way to free the trapped air in the pump housing is by running the ABS pump manually via Vagcom/VCDS during bleeding.

Even a microscopic amount of air will shag your chances of a firm pedal and you will also get an ABS & ESP warning light up.

On my old car, which had a bosch ABS pump, the general advice was to try skidding in a sand car park to bleed the ABS pump, not sure if that would work in the audi though

Just in case anyone finds this useful in the future. I managed to sort the issue by simply rebleeding, this time getting the Mrs to hit the brake pedal while I opened the nipples. The pressure bleeders running 10-15 psi don't seem to have enough pressure to really push trapped air through the system... There was no need to bleed the ABS pump, well not for me anyway.

Anyway all good, i'm back out on the road... :blackrs4: :blackrs4:
