Rattle from sachs clutch. Video?

Post by harding » Sat Sep 17, 2016 9:31 am

Hey,
im gonna do my clutch change in a month. Found a SACHS performance kit with pressure plate, flywheel and clutch for a neat price.
However, some people, aswell as the mechanic doing the job told me there will be a rattle sounding from the single mass flywheel when smoothly riding in city traffic etc. "some people does not stand to hear it". Anyone has experience? How bad is it?

Now i'm looking for someone having a video of this rattle? I just want to hear what im getting myself into.

I have a Loba billeted single mass flywheel with Sachs clutch plate. At low speeds only ie 10/15 mph you can here a whine from the clutch usually in 2nd gear turning into a junction. In 1st if you want to pull away in a stealthy manner you'll get chatter. Normal conditions it's barely audible.
If you irritated by strange obscure noises don't do it.
The upside is a faster spin up and free'er revving.

Not the same type of car. But I just watched this video and you can hear the type of noise which you'd expect, when the reviewer comes to a stop around 12min 50sec

Hi,

I run a Loba Single Mass Flywheel (SMF) with Sachs performance clutch it does have a considerable amount of chatter low down the rev range or if in too high a gear so you learn not to 'load' it too much to avoid that, as a vehicle tech I don't particularly like how much chatter it does cause but as said it is avoidable.

If you purchase a Sachs performance clutch kit without a SMF they do not offer a sprung clutch plate only a solid drive plate (there also offer a paddle plate but not advisable for road use) now this solid plate is designed to replace the OE clutch to be paired to the OE Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) so the DMF provides some 'damping'

Now I may be wrong but unfortunately I can't remember if the Loba SMF in mine is paired to the Sachs performance clutch kit with a solid drive plate - if so this would explain the considerable chatter I have i.e. no damping on either component - I will find out what clutch I have as the gearbox is coming out of mine in the next few days.

I did try to find out some details from Loba as to what would have been supplied but found them to be f*ck useless coupled with the fact they don't make SMF's anymore

The Sachs performance clutch & SMF kit they offer utilises a 'sprung' clutch centre plate to pair with their own Single Mass Flywheel this should give a reasonable level of smooth take up with not too much chatter.

I spoke to Sachs performance (who I deal with a little through work) they quite rightly said their own SMF's are made to match their own performance clutch kits - the route I wish I had followed :)

Hope that all makes sense!

Regards

Rob
