Fitting new brake lines

Post by jonytek » Mon Sep 12, 2016 10:26 pm

Hi all, so I am thinking of fitting new front disks and pads all round this weekend which seems simple enough. There's a good guide I found on here for the front and then the rear I am assuming will be relatively straight forward also, even though I haven't managed to find a good guide. I also wanted to fit some new brake lines, for 75 quid I can pick up the Goodridge lines so though I'd give them a go while I'm at it. Has anyone fitted the lines before that can give me some advice?

Running the lines dry while I switch them over doesn't seem like the greatest idea so how do you deal with the flow of fluid? I believe that running them dry also requires vag-com to bleed the ABS pump?

Any other advice would be appreciated, even if it's a 'no don't do it!'.

Cheers.

Just plug the end with something. And if you work quick enough, you won't loose much liquid. Just make sure you check the main reservoir after each side and top up as needed. There isn't much pressure in the system at all unless a brake pedal applied. So you should be ok.

And then just bleed out? Easy.

Yep. Than bleed as normal. I suggest get one of those vacume brake bleeding kits of eBay. Much much better than old skool pump and hold. And can be done by one person ;)

Fitting new brake lines

Post by Seattle-squash » Mon Sep 12, 2016 11:32 pm

Simply replace them, loosen each end and a very straight forward task. Bleed the system in any you prefer; pressure bleeder or have a buddy pump the pedal while you work the "nipple" and assure that you keep topping off the reservoir and make sure you stay on top of it if you do it manually. Just remember (2) nipples in the front per caliper and (1) each in the rear. No need to vag-com anything, at least for me. Then bed the pads correctly and good to go.

Edit: sorry missed some above responses, you probably heard what you needed to get it done. Good luck!

Correct me if I am wrong, but you only use one nipple for the front calipers. No need to use both.

Good question, I could not successfully bleed them, then noticed 2nd one and same procedure and finally perfect. But maybe with a different process one is sufficient.

And what about closing the circuit for the sensor? I'm fitting Ferodo's which don't have a sensor.

Or use the plug from old pads and solder the ends together to make something like this : Image

put cling film /cellophane over master cyl lid before opening brake system/loosening line-this stops fluid running out[ creates vacuum] :beerchug:
