Tarnished chrome trim

Post by Starry » Sun Aug 28, 2016 7:45 pm

I started to prep the trim for painting today and whilst i was using the scotch bright i noticed it cleaned the tarnished chrome, it brought it back to new condition.
Before i decided on painting it i tried loads of cleaners on it, nothing seemed to touch it.
This is how it looks on the roof bar..

Scotchbrite will bring the aluminium up a treat, but beware, unless youre etching and painting it straight away, it will start corroding immediately.
The trims are anodised and sadly they tend to end up looking stained or spotted with watermarks.

Once you scrub the thin anodised protective layer off the trim, it will eventually turn white and dusty with fine corrosion setting in.

Hello all wondered if you put a coat of wax on them after scotching them would it stop them corroding ?

This may be the case and I'm sure it is if you have previous experience.
But it took very little time to do, so as a monthly cleaning job, I'd still go with it. And as said, a good wax may help...

Just cleaning with a drop of WD40 rids the trim of water marks, cleans it and protects. Wouldn't use abrasives on it.

I used very fine steel wool (0000 or 000 grade) saturated with Klasse all in one cleaner/sealant
Lightly polish it, very lightly then wipe off
Cleaned and protected
Came out perfect, like new, no damage to finish
