Gearbox problems

Right , clutch failed and totally fell to bits . Replaced clutch and also slave return pipe for the upgraded one that a guy on here sells and also a new slave cylinder .

Now when I'm driving fast it crunches through the selector when only selecting 4th , driving normal it's totally fine and doesn't have any problems .

Anyone had a similar problem before ?

Cheers

Very similar problem iv just got the car back from fixing.

Mine used to at high revs or on a quick gear change crunch into 3rd, you could stop it doing it by changing slower with full clutch depression though at the time.

My box then failed completely, suspected overage oil and overheated itself and the box came off to be rebuilt. At this point the synchros had effectively melted and one had touch welded to input shaft. When they investigated the box synchros were damaged but they noted previous wear on the 3rd gear synchro which would account for the previous light crunch.

I opted for a full rebuild, new synchros, drive ratios, seals etc and the box is now silky smooth.

So based on my own car id perhaps guess at damage to a synchro as a result of clutch failure or even coincidental as it wasn't the worn synchro that caused my box failure.

hope this helps?

Yeah that helps a lot man thanks , the clutch pedal was also sticking on mine every so often due to the return pipe being faulty so think it's just caused everything to go pop . Does sound very similar to my fault I'm having just now . Just need to avoid 4th gear for the time being I think

How much did it set you back for a full rebuild ? I know places will vary in price just for a idea

I had a lot of extra work done at the same time and extra parts I needed rather than one synchro, I'm fairly sure it was 8 hours for the box on and off, plus the synchro part (again I had all of them and drive ratios replaced) and 350 for the box to be refurbed too. Probably 1500 to 2000 ish all in and that was with MRC.

Labour time for getting the box in and out doesn't bother me as it helps being a mechanic for jaguar and have use of a ramp at work . Just gearbox repair I would be paying for really so hopefully won't sting me too much . Just a pain in the ass as iv already had it out

I would say your clutch plate is worn.
Did you get you gearbox rebuilt?

So was the thread.
What I don't understand is, how the owner who is a mechanic didn't know what was wrong with the box.
