I know there are many factors governing what MPG you get out of these things, but I am just curious as to if there is a massive difference depending on what tyres people use, I notice that a lot of people go for the Goodyear F1, I personally always have the Dunlop Sport Max GT.

I drive about 5 miles at each end of the motorway and 60 miles on it as a regular route and sitting at around 75 (ish) I often get over 26mpg, the highest I got when the M25 was 50 mph most of the way due to roadworks was 29.9..... Couldn't quite knock it over to 30 and I was really trying by the end of the journey just to take a picture.

Again, I know there are many factors but if anyone out there does anything similar and uses the same tyre, then I know it is not the tyre, however if everyone on here uses Eagles and gets nowhere near / much better, than maybe there is something in it.

This has all come about as I need two new front tyres and someone has commented on one of the reviews that they switched to F1's and lost 5 mpg.

Fuel economy can be greatly affected by tyre choice, its why they have the fuel rating on tyres now, if you have a super sticky race tyre then its rolling friction is higher than that of a "normal" tyre which means the engine has to work harder to overcome the extra friction.
I mean you wouldnt notice it in the pedal but it would change your mpg.

For example, if you car has a sticky brake calliper then you can loose huge amounts of mpg because the friction is higher and the engine has to overcome the added friction by pushing harder which uses more fuel etc.
Same deal with tyres.

I have Goodyear Eagle F1's on mine and on a very good run, i planned my route perfectly to the Shell V-Power station and had loads of time so didn't rush at all on normal A roads, coasting up to roundabouts and avoiding stopping etc. I don't think i've had it that high ever since, maybe a few 30's but only just.

Yeah i dont think you'll be loosing quite that much, but mpg loss is as i explained from frition of tyre tread/type/size etc.. it will make a difference even if its just a small one.
I'd like to know the difference on mpg from a grade A tyre to a grade E tyre

Had a read round on the web, and long story short the most mpg will be affected over a long term period with "energy saving" tyres is around 6% or about 2.4mpg based on an average of 40mpg.

So really although rolling resistance is greater on a sticker tyre its not going to make much difference in real terms, you'd loose/gain more by having the correct/incorrect pressures.

Well yeah i agree, but the percentage would be far less on our cars as we would never hit 40mpg so it'd be more like 1 or 2% which is neglible and i wouldnt be spending the extra cash on "energy saving tyres" to warrant a 2% increase in fuel economy... as above bought the wrong car if your chasing those kinda things.

Forget what tyres offer the best MPG and think about what tyres offer the most 'Smiles per Gallon'

Michelin MXL - bloody awful longlife tyre. I had set of these in early hot hatch days, did 40k miles and only half worn! Great for sliding around on damp roads though - matching less power with less grip can still make lots of fun.
