Bluetooth - retrofit. Whine through speakers.

Post by lugars4 » Wed Feb 17, 2016 5:54 pm

I retrofitted the bluetooth a while back. Bought the loom off Ebay. All working well.

Sine then, i noticed a whine through the speakers. The pitch increases with the revs of the engine. Its there with the radio on / off, all the time, worse with a cold engine.
So i think its being caused by non-shielded wires on the loom, or a bad earth ? Causing the audio feed to pickup noise from other cables.

Anyone experienced this before?

What Bluetooth module did you fit?

I've helped many people retrofit the OEM BT module and never heard of this problem before.

And how did you wire in the microphone?

That's one of the latest OEM modules, so my best guess would be that the harness - which isn't an Audi item as Audi maintain that a BT retrofit is impossible - has been badly made.

As said before I've never heard of this problem with the nearly 50 BT OEM module retrofits I've helped owners with (over 10 of which I've done personally for them).

I have the same issue before and it annoyed me so much I have to take it out. I think the wiring needs additional shielding as the centre console has a lot of interference. Good if you can add extra earthing wires.

Was that with a genuine Audi bluetooth box mate?

I am going to try a new harness from Kuftatech to see if that solves. Not holding my breath though.

Where would I add extra earthing wires and where from?

I have the kauftec fiscon module, the OE one won't work as aftermarket fitting I believe the wiring harness is not compatible. The OE one is supposed to be hidden under the passenger's seat.

You need to find the head unit's ground and put an extra grounding to the metal part of the chasis.

Running the wire perpendicular to the antenna is supposed to minimize the interference also.

Here's an article that could also help:

I think the biggest reason is not the noise for me, but the music is only stream as mono to the speakers thatis not what I wanted. It's perfectly ok for phone calls though. I ended up buying a FM transmitter instead for the music.

Head unit ground to metal part of chassis-

Do you mean ground it to the metal chasis of the head unit itself or to the car?

Finding head unit ground - do you mean splice off the ground on the loom rather than internally in the head unit?

ground the wiring to the chasis. you need to attach an extra wire of the same gauge to do the grounding.

don't ground to the mounting bracket of the head unit unless you test and it is actually connected to the chasis, sometimes it could be just a piece of metal between plastics, or a factory grounding point.

Given up on this <beep> thing, even a kufatec harness still whined.

Time to consider other options

Where have you installed the BT module ? Audi put in the passenger footwell and most retrofits go behind (under) then glovebox - if yours was nearer the RNS-E mayvbe that is the problem ?

I have also seen roofing lead used to shield electronic clocks from interference but I would get the two items as far away from each other as possible and test again.

Bt module is behind glovebox. Mic lead runs up side pillar and along into the light cluster in the middle.

Have also plugged bluetooth ina and left it on passenger floor, still the same.
Stereo works fine, as soon as i plug in the bluetooth harness theres inteferenceand noise, mainly from the rear speakers, oddly.
