Main beam...tis useless

Post by Fatneck73 » Mon Feb 01, 2016 9:38 pm

Hello

The headlights on my B7 when on dipped beam, are fine...am happy with them. But...when I push for main beam, pretty much bugger-all happens. Don't get me wrong, the function works - there is more but the 'extra' light is pretty much naff all!!!

Is this normal? Anyone else think the same or have I poss got wrong bulbs etc????

Cheers,

Hi,
My 2007 B7's headlights are excellent, and the roads down here in Cornwall are very dark and winding, it could be worth checking that the height sensors on your front suspension are not damaged.

Hey Simon

Damaged in what way? They work, adjust and are levelled ok...its just that going from dipped to main makes little difference. The span is greater but no brighter!!!!

I'm gonna check the bulbs coz summink ain't right.

Hello mate,
The headlight main and dipped beam is the same bulb, theres an electrically operated flap that changes the beam in the reflector. Thats the bi-xenon set up.
I feel the same on mine, but i improved it slightly by raising the headlight range using VCDS....
I will look up the procedure and you could have a tweek of the setup to see if it improves.

This is the method for adjusting the range.
Just note the numbers before you adjust anything in case you want to revert back afterwards.

Sorry... and heres a writeup on the physical adjustment (its for a TT but it works for the RS4 no problem)

Bloody phone and my numptiness made me paste the same link twice.....
Adjust yer range height and you will see a mild improvement.
Not much you can do about the brightness unfortunately.

If it's on the original lamps they'll probably be really dim. HID's get dimmer over time and usually last 8-10 years, get some new bulbs in there and it'll be much better.

Edit: as well as the projector giving you full beam, do you also have halogen H7 lamps for dedicated high beam like the C5? They should be giving you a fair amount of light when full beam is on, are they working at all?

I would speak to Trups reg lighting. I did the clear lens upgrade and changed the bulbs to 5500k morimoto bulbs all from Trups. The difference is huge and well worth it.

+1

Clear projector lens + morimoto bulbs gives great results. Posting this pic for the hundredth time, but it makes the point quite well!

I'm in the process of getting that upgrade done on mine, new headlights, new projectors w/ clear lenses, morrimoto lamps and 55W ballasts. Can't wait :D

No, on the B7 bi-Xenons (which the RS4 has) there is only one bulb which is used for both dipped and main beam.

Also worth checking via VCDS that the car has not been put in Tourist mode.

In the interest of balance, from my experiences I wouldn't ever fit Trups products to any of my cars, ever again.
