Hi Just been sent an email from Parkers advertising their 'Modern Classics' guide (see link above) plus a few more guides such as 'TOP 10 FUTURE ICONS

Alfa Romeo 156 GTA, BMW M5 (E60), Citroën Saxo VTS, Ford Focus RS, Jaguar XK8, Mercedes-Benz SL500, Nissan Skyline GT-R, RenaultSport Clio Trophy, Porsche Boxster S, Volkswagen Corrado VR6'

and a couple more similar guides...but why haven't they included the RS4?!! I feel like emailing them to ask why!
Has anyone else received this email and thought the same

Ah the 156GTA. I'd probably still have mine if it wasn't for the fact that by the time you fix one fault, 2 other things went wrong. It cost me a fortune in annual servicing (to be more precise; fixing the continuous faults) even though I was only doing a few hundred miles a year.

Yeah going on about Saxo's is a bit laughable.

Yeah I had an Alfa 156 Gta before the rs4 too. After over a year with the rs4 I honestly think it costs roughly the same to run and maintain as the Gta, and yet the rs4 is a far better all round car! Yeah the rs4 should 100% be on the list!

I had a silver156 T/S and used to go to the Alfa meets and always yearned after a GTA. However the 156 let me down badly (engine blew) and put me off Alfas ever since. The Alfa V6 engine was more bullet proof than the T/Spark though! Had a 164 T/S before the 156 too! However the RS4 (Cab) is easily the best car I've had

Yeah the 3.2 V6 in the GTA was pretty much bullet proof. I blew a gearbox racing a bike over Vauxhall Bridge but they replaced it under warranty.
During the 3 years when I owned the Alfa and the RS4 at the same time I can honestly say that the Alfa cost me a lot more money even though I only did a couple of hundred miles a year in it and the RS4 was used daily. The Alfa was 3 years older than the RS4 but even after 8 years of owning the Alfa it only had 40k on the clock. I had to let it go for next to nothing as I kept waiting to fix everything but something else would go wrong (mainly electrical faults) and it was costing me at least a grand a year just to keep it..
RS4 wins hands down.

Not a classic but a lowered saxo with a few tweaks = fun... Had one many years ago and it went round twisties like nothing else..

I think it will be hard for something like the E60 M5 to become a proper classic in due time because of the gearbox. It was passable when the car was new, but with technology moving on anyone who drives it now for the first time goes "what the **** is wrong with this thing?" Great engine or not.

Manual gearbox cars by contrast will always be good to drive.

Shitreon Saxo, really? I would have been less surprised if they'd put a Vauxhall Corsa in there. What a load of old tosh. The value of a Saxo will not climb, nor has it ever been a good enough car to become a classic marque. The value will plummet to borderline scrap worthiness and stay there. In 10 years time, I fully expect these magazines will declare a Daewoo Matiz a 'modern classic'.

Of course the RS4 will become a classic, I once had a 1979 3.0S Capri, I never ever thought that it would become a classic.
IMO, there are classic cars but not the Saxo, it will remain the piece of sh1t that it is

Do not worry, the RS4 is on the list for future issues. Give us time!

Yeah, find it hard to believe that it's a future classic, nothing really special to commend it.

I had a Sierra XR4i for 14 years. Looked after it really well in the belief that it would one day become collectable. Never did and prices haven't gone up much since. I scrapped it when it succumbed to the rust bug after 21 years.

We included the Saxo because it's the kind of car we envision being in the same place Escort XR3is/RS Turbos are now. It's a generational thing; many XR3is/RS Turbos were modified/thrashed/trashed to oblivion, so in future untouched, mint cars will carry a premium.
Perhaps not to the same degree (it was a once in a lifetime car), but the Escort RS Turbo that sold for £ridiculous at the NEC Classic Motor Show last year shows the value in these cult, unmodifed classics.

Saxo VTS/VTR were ok, but not great.

For that era, I'd say the 106 Rallye or Clio Williams were the icons to have within that market sector.
