8 years of trouble free ownership and then

Yesterday after 8 years of trouble free ownership my B7 Avant without warning cut out leaving me stranded at the side of the road.
Called out the AA but after about 10 minutes I was able to re-start it and it stayed running for long enough to make it to Basingstoke Audi. I got them to read the ECU and it had no faults logged! NO FAULTS, it was bl**dy dead.
They called me back later and diagnosed faulty fuel pump. This is the first fault I have experienced but £920 incl vat is way more than I expected for a fuel pump

they have not even given me a courtesy car, I had to walk home.
I can't drive it like this so will have to have it done. I can probably expect more of this so am looking forward to getting the B9 into the showrooms.

2 years in mine almost to the day and i've just settled a bill with audi for £4100!
Front discks and pads, clutch, flywheel, o/s control arm, window wipers and a plug in to find out which parking sensor is faulty. Gutted but i think that's just part and parcel of owning what was a £50k car when it was new.
You've done well to last 8 years without a big bill!

Whenever I read car reviews, I can't help but notice that Audi never seem to score well in the reliability ratings. There is always a comment about great build quality but then 3 stars for reliability and I always struggle with how the 2 things can be reconciled. Then worry about breaking down.

I was so taken by surprise that I forgot to ask for a breakdown of the £920 between parts labour etc.

Pump can be had for around 200 quid apparently

OEM VAG in Germany about 250 quid.
Not sure how much work it is to change though.

Depends on if its the low or high pressure pump. High pressure pumps (2 of) are a piece of cake to change.
But you can bet the pump is a LOT more that £250 from Audi.

wow and no loaner, sure theyre not having your pants down?
its a 30 min job
on top of the engine, 3 bolts 2 fuel lines and a plug, i wonder if they are changing both so £500 parts £100 labour £420 for the amount of lube your gonna need

The thing he showed me was under the rear seat on the drivers side. I don't know if it was high or low pressure, or for that matter, whether it was a fuel pump at all
There was another RS4 Avant owner in Basingstoke Audi at the same time and he said straight away, it would be the pump or the relay. It took BA hours to figure it out.

That's the low pressure pump - the high pressure pumps are on top of the engine.

8 years and only that? Wow.
I've had mine 18 months - new disks and pads all round, new clutch, flywheel, master cylinder and slave cylinder, replacement CV gaiter, new aux rad, MRC health check. Car is in this week for some bubbling paintwork to be sorted under warranty. Then I can possibly get on and start the mods - full carbon clean, stage 2 and precat delete....

Centurion Audi charged me £280 for a pump + coupler and washers in May. Looking at the invoice they charged me £300 for diagnosing it, which of course involved removing the rear seat to check the pump itself.
Can't see what the labour was for replacing the pump but the whole invoice that time was £1494 which was parts (pump and 4 x suspension arms/bits to fit at £740, and £506 labour total

Now they say that dirt has got fed through to the "fuel rail" and is causing the pressure to drop from 6 bar to 4 bar so I need a new Fuel Rail, another £350.
So I thought I would be smart this time and get an alternative quote from Syntner in Reading. They said £300 per side parts plus £1,000 labour. Maybe, Basingstoke Audi are OK after all, maybe.

so in effect what they are saying is their fuel filters are not fit for purpose and are letting dirt through?

Which is after all, perhaps a 5 minute job (if you stop and take a break)...

No what they are saying is they misdiagnosed the fault and are now guessing where the fault is.
