AMD Carbon Clean

Hi Guys,

Has anyone had any issues with an AMD Carbon Clean? I'm not after any other work right now (I'll wait for an MRC Remap). I'm located in Essex so if the results are similar I'll use AMD.

Does anyone have experience of both an AMD and MRC carbon clean and if so, were there noticeable differences between the two? Cheers.

I used AMD for my first carbon clean because they were the cheapest and equidistant to me as MRC.

Within a month I went to MRC for a remap (and other work). When the car was there they said it needed more cleaning as the clean from AMD wasn't sufficient. AMD had provided me with photos of the work they did and it looked absolutely fine to me but I'm a consumer not a specialist mechanic so wasn't in a position to argue.

When I mentioned on my blog that MRC had had to clean it again, AMD actually phoned me on a Sunday to discuss. I did say I wasn't in any way unhappy with them I was just relaying what MRC had said to me (and billed me for).

Either AMD's clean was poor, or MRC charged me for something I didn't need. To this day I don't actually know which.

What I *can* say is that after AMD did the clean and vac leak fix on the rs4, it transformed it from a bag of <beep> to a smooth car with lots of power again and I was very happy. The service I received there was very good, friendly staff, etc. If MRC hadn't have said there was a 'problem' with AMD's work I wouldn't have known otherwise.

Sorry I didn't intend to rant when i started typing.. I'm glad a a lot of you have had good experiences, hopefully mine's a one off.

AMD put my car back together really poorly after I'd spent nearly 6 grand on a gearbox change, new intercoolers, cam belt and aux belt. There were so many bits not put back together right or not tight it was unbelievable. They didn't change the cambelt tentioner and that failed about 1000 miles later, the remap was utter garbage. My headlights were bouncing around like crazy because they hadn't put the bottom bolts in... Basically nearly everything was re-done properly by MRC. It was a complete waste of my money going to AMD.

Most of the loose stuff was found by me, so not mrc making it up, and I saw for myself the torque/hp/boost curves and throttle position when it was on the dyno so i can say for certain Doug hadn't fudged it to make amd look bad.

Oh, I guess this doesn't relate to RS4's, but AMD like to tell people their turbos need changing, when they're totally fine. They showed me some pics of my turbos with a barely visible hairline crack between the wastegate and turbine on both turbos. This is normal!!

Yours isn't a one off, I know a few people who have had some appalling work done by them

Had a carbon clean done with pictures, vac leak and MAF issue fixed, Milltek fitted and pre-cats removed and a remap. On a separate visit they fitted an OEM clutch, flywheel, master and slave cylinders. I have never had any reason to doubt any of their work, on time and at a good price and the car has been quick, smooth and reliable.

I guess like anywhere some people have good experiences, and some less good. I would have no problem with going back there for more work.

I had a carbon clean there this year and was supplied with pictures etc, I was very happy with them and they also do my servicing and fitted my brakes for me even when I supplied the parts.

I know there is an MRC fan club on here and I am sure it is very justified as they seem to know what they are doing, but in my humble opinion AMD have always done me a good job and I have no issue recommending them.

My car was carbon cleaned at AMD earlier this year before I bought it. MRC seemed surprised it had been cleaned when I took it to them for a health check recently, they think it needs doing again. They commented that they didn't think AMD do a great job on the carbon cleans, but then these are the words of a competitor so I'd take with a pinch of salt.

MRC also noticed that whoever fitted the clutch on the car last year didn't torque the subframe bolts up all the way. I need to check when I get home if it was AMD that did the clutch, can't remember.

I also saw in the paperwork from previous owners that AMD had installed the KW coilovers on the car but left the shocks on different setting all round, which was found by 4-rings later on.

My only other experience with AMD was years and years ago when they fitted a milltek exhaust to my old mk4 golf gti. The exhaust would move a little when warm and end up touching the underside of the car, as it had been installed too close to the body of the car, causing a lot of noise in the cabin. Ended up taking it all the way up from surrey to the milltek factory for them to re-fit.
