Starting issue

Post by ASC » Sun Jul 19, 2015 6:16 pm

Evening.. I've been getting the delayed start problem with the push button for a couple of weeks and yesterday morning the car refused to start at all.
I could hear the click behind the dash but no start. It eventually did start after 10 mins of swearing at it. Thought it might be clutch switch but it's been replaced in the last 2 months by the previous owner and I tried the hold button down test and still no start.
I read a thread saying it could be starter motor or the relays but I'll obviously try the relays first.
Thing is it's been fine today, no problems and I've had at least 5 starts throughout the day. If a starter was fect, would it not be permanently fect and not start at all?

On a positive note, I had a non res Miltek fitted yesterday, so every cloud..

Mine was the same replaced starter and problem solved. Also was notable how quick the engine cranked / how fast the car started on a new starter. Really made a difference. Hadn't noticed until after replacement how tired it had become.

I had a starter issue too, the connectors into the back of it had corroded. Took West London Audi 5 weeks of looking to find the problem because "the computer says there isn't a fault".

Sh!t..Was hoping it was a relay.
I believe fitting the starter motor is a pita, subframe drop and 4 hours labour have been mentioned. :(

Thanks for info.

Never thot should have had a quick look while we had it on the ramp doing the milltek. Might just be a lose wire.

Cheap fix, you can get them under the Valeo part number (same as OEM) for much less and it's an easy replacement. IIRC I paid less than 100 quid for one.

Stoke Audi previously quoted £315 for a new starter or £224 if you send your old one back.

I can get a Lucas unit for £180 from Eurocarparts and a Valeo for £133 from West Lancs Auto. Is there much difference between the two, apart from £47?

You tried Taylors Auto electrical in Mastrick?

I've had a few Bosch starters from them in the past

Yeah tried them thanks mate but they couldn't find the part in their system. Then they asked if I wanted to book the car in to test the starter motor to see if that was the problem or not at £75 p/h + VAT.. lol

Anyone know what tests I could do to rule out relays and the push button before I buy the Valeo unit? Also where exactly is the starter?

There is a thread from a while back. I think you can hear a click if the button and relay work. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Thanks for that Mike. Good reading and it really sounds like my starter is on its way out.
