DIY Exhaust Fitting
DIY Exhaust Fitting
Just bought myself a pair of resonated Milltek centre sections to replace the non-resonsated already fitted as I've had enough of the booming. How simple is it to swap them over? Is it just a case of undoing some clamps, dropping the old one out, then fit and tighten up?
Do I need new clamps? Are there any gaskets to replace? Is there some kind of sealant I need? Can I do it by reversing up onto ramps? Do I need to move any other parts out of the way?
Grateful for any advice.
Cheers,
Bryan

Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
Having watched MRC install my Milltek it's as you describe. No gaskets and they used sillycunt to seal the joints, I don't think it was standard sillycon. Maybe give Ben @ MRC a ring and ask what type they use.

Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
That's exactly it. The hardest bit though is getting the old ones off their rubber hangers. I found a bit of fairy liquid and then twisting them off with great force was the easiest way. Then the next hardest bit is getting your tail pipes to line up equally in the rear cut outs.
Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
If the centre section is new it will come with a set of clamps. If not then your existing clamps should be ok as long astheyarenkt damaged or seized up.
Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
The rear box hangers can be undone with 2 13mm or 15mm bolts and the whole bracket drops down.
Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
The rear hangers are ok, its the mid section ones that the centre pipe hangs from that I had problems with. I used to leave the back boxes hanging (but supported) when changing centre sections.
Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
I cut my middle rubbers off as they were old and rigid, purchased new from seat as they were the same part number
Then ordered a set of exhaust pliers from flea bay, makes easy fitting
If using second hand resonators, clean out the internal and external mating surfaces likewise with the back boxes I used some heavy grade wet & dry, then some exhaust sealant makes everything move nicely,
I also replaced the back hangers as helped installation
Note; check the heat shields above the back boxes as they come loose then rattle over bumps, found this on one of mine used a zinc repair washer
Good luck and enjoy the queiter cabin

Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
Forgot to say about supporting the down pipes, don't let them hang down on their own weight. I used a couple of bricks with a nice peice of wide hardwood sat on top to stop any scoring

Re: DIY Exhaust Fitting
Cheers guys. Sounds like something I can tackle myself. Probably be another week or so as my wife is using the RS4 until her new car arrives. Will need a deep clean as I can't even bring myself to see what the kids have done in the back. It's not all bad though as I've been driving this in the mean time :

Bloody hell, you weren't joking. The centre rubber hangers are a 'kin nightmare. Cut them off in the end. What a pig of a job. Given it up for the day with the car still on the ramps.MikeFish wrote:That's exactly it. The hardest bit though is getting the old ones off their rubber hangers. By the way MRC fitted the existing exhaust. They know how to make sure they don't come apart. Simply can't get any movement when trying to free the centre sections from the front. Even blow torch not helping. Undone the rears so can get some purchase from behind (steady) but still nothing.
Back to work tomorrow, so car out of action for a few days.
Now, where's my 944.....
