Sell or Spend the money???

Post by beaker25 » Tue May 19, 2015 11:02 am

Hi All,

Looking for some opinions, never a shortage of them on here ha ha.

Basically owned my RS4 loon for 18 months now, 56 plate with 43K and replaced the following outside of normal servicing costs,

Oil cooler and pipes were replaced just before I bought the car.

Both Aux radiators replaced July last year, £1000

New air-con compressor, re-gas etc a couple of weeks ago. £1600

Couple of other small jobs, cam sensor, headlight washer pump.

I am now going to need to do the following in the near future,

Clutch/ Clutch pipe etc, it is still perfectably driveable, but at slow speed when car is hot it is noticeable difficult to select 1st and 2nd.

DRC has a weep from two shocks, Specialist I have been having it serviced at has mentioned that it is ok at the moment after he recharged it last year, but will need replaced, so realistically as it has only had one replaced 4 years ago, they are all going to need done, potentially pipes etc also.

New front discs and pads are going to be required in the next 5k I would say, lip on the disc and slight Judder under heavy braking, my dad and brother have driven the car and have not noticed it, but I can feel it.

Question I am asking is, sell it as is, and take a hit or looking at all the common faults should I get a couple of years of trouble free motoring out of it now????
And if so, will it help resale value spending the money, I know I wont get it back, but aside from selling it on here, I dont think Joe bloggs would pay any more cash.

Thanks,

Hi,

all depends on how much you enjoy driving IMO. Anyone worth their salt is going to take in all those service/repair items to account when pricing the car, so you are going to 'lose' the money whether you do the jobs or not. As you have pretty low mileage, I would say do the jobs over the next 12-18 months and enjoy the car. Then you could sell it for a decent price, still with low miles and all the big jobs sorted. There's a thread on here today about value of well sorted lower mileage cars if that gives you a boost!

I was in a similar situation recently.
Have my RS4 (RS$) 2 years now.

In that time it has a few things going that needed doing

Sticky Clutch - Full Clutch, Pedal box and pipes replaced - Majority under Warranty
ECU Fault - 2 new ECU's - 60% warranty covered
airbox solenoid and exhaust flap vacuum issue
and more recently one shock gone - got two replaced with a 35% contribution from Audi
Oh yeah - Brakes all round too..

It's not a nice list to read and I know the Oil Cooler needs doing at some stage along with the other two shocks - all pipework is in good nick thankfully.

I had a good chat to a RS Specialist about it when the DRC failed, and previously when I thought about cutting my losses.
We both came to the following conclusion (Man maths may have been involved)

The car has 3 stages of ownership
1. New car, Warranty covered and very few issues for years
2. Getting a bit older, few big ticket items need doing (5-8 years) This owner takes a hit
3. Big ticket items are done - General maintenance with a few smaller items.

I'm in stage 2, with a good bit invested, could cut my losses now and pass it on, but the next owner gets a sorted car.
the car is worth about 3k more than I paid for it - Covers the big costs.
If i keep it I have a few more bills, but could get a good number of years out of it.

I haven't seen anything else that comes close and it's been my dream car for years.

So overall I decided to keep it - again "man maths " may have been involved!!!

I'm definitely in stage 2. Had my car for 2.5 years now, bought it at 5 years old.

- It needed 3 DRC shocks in year 1, with some audi goodwill.
- It needed a new manifold and rear discs in year 2

This was fairly acceptable as the car hasn't really depreciated so compares well to a car at Stage 1.

Then it all went wrong. Got a misfire a month or so ago. I thought a software upgrade might fix it but didn't. I'm picking it up tomorrow and it's practically been stripped and re-built.

- coil packs, injectors, carbon clean
- oil cooler and pipes
- both aux radiators
- clutch and flywheel
- front discs

Was it two minds whether to get shot of it but decided to get various big ticket items done in one go. Gonna cost the price of a small car. I hope I move to Stage 3 after this.........

Keep it and spend, it's got good miles on it, so residual will be high. Do you do many miles in it?

Hi Jaysrs4,

Not alot at all, prob like 3k a year.

Yeah decided to keep it, sorting clutch next week, then new discs and pads after my road trip.

DRC will just be keeping an eye on it, as the rest of the car is standard do not plan on going down the coil over route.
