:audibash:

Just know as soon as the bumper comes off its going to be the cooler pipes.

Forge or audi. That is the question

Anyone got tips for removal / fitting new cooler?

Bollox.

This will help and much praise to AudiPardner for posting:

and the fit:

JHM all the way in my opinion. OEM is flawed on the most spectacularly level due to galvanic nobility, and the Forge relocation in front of the main rad doesn't do it for me.

I did the lines on mine and with the dollar weak against the pound (1.57, may push 1.60 next week as it broke 1.58 this) it's a cost viable option.

Duralac anti corrosive jointing compound and black RC battery pack shrink wrap around the joints will help future proof...

Good luck!

It will most likely be a split pipe, there was a recall on the pipes. They often rub against each other which causes the braided hoses to split.

If its corroded connections, then a set of new pipes will be suffice, if however when you take the pipes off, you manage to damage the cooler pipe. Well then you have 2 choices, refurb your oil cooler or fork out circa £600 for a new one.

Thanks for the replies.

Sods law i guess, almost traded car in thursday for 11 plate RS5... Haha just my luck.

Took the cooler and hoses off today as a complete unit. Looks like the leak is coming from the longer hose/pipe around halfway at the small elbow.

The cooler itself looks in ok condition for a 9 year old car so im thinking its been changed in the past.

Iv got the cooler and hoses in a vice ready for teasing with a dremel tomorrow morning. Hopefully i can save the cooler ends. If not i think i will take it to get refurbed in glasgow and hopefully save £500 in the process....

Fingers crossed

Yeah I looked at the JHM option but for most people when they corrode away they just don't want the car off the road long enough to buy the JHM pipes. I went for the Forge option as I didn't want to wait for JHM pipe and the OEM seems like a waste of money to me.
You sure you can't get the Forge one sooner? Did you try Revolution? I think Revolution did mine with overnight delivery, same price as I found on ebay or from Forge.

I went with the OE setup and used duralac on the connectors to the cooler.

Had to get a new cooler as well as one connector came out fine, however the other took most of the threaded connection, so this considerably puts the price up. However as the car is a 2006 and this was the first time the lines and oil cooler has been done and its 2015, hopefully the next set will last 9 years.

I had mine refurbed on my last RS4 for £110.

Is there nowhere you can get the long pipe made up/copied.

Audi Aberdeen on Ebay £270. Give them a ring maybe they can get it there quicker.

Yeah tried revolution they don't keep stock. No one has stock other that forge themselves. I wil see how I get on with refurb tomorrow. If it's not looking likely I wil return pipes to tips and order forge kit.

Sorry for the lack of updates.

Managed to heat / cut / tease the nut of one end and thread was perfectly intact /useable. The other end i used same method but all threads goosed.

Took the cooler to local radiator Shop in glasgow today for them to have a look. They are calling supplier in the morning for 2 x new ends of correct thread. Fingers crossed this can be a solution. More updates tomorrow..,,

Wee update...

Radiator supply / recon shops in glasgow could source the correct alu 18L metric / femaled JIC ends to weld on to the cooler.. I Tried pirtek, hydrasun plus more with no luck in aluminium.

I was determined not to let this beat me so i went to a machine shop and had 2 new alu weld on ends machined up, cleaned out cooler with brake cleaner and air hose. got a specialist ally welder to weld on. Threads and hose connection spot on. Leak tested by connecting new hoses, blanking other end, manifold woth 2bar air to one end and submerged in bucket of water. Jobs a good un..

Rubbed the cooler down and painted with 2 x coats of satin black.

Assembled back up, new oil and filter added and left to warm up. No leaks after oil reaching 100degC. Will heat cycle again in the morning to be sure before fitting bumper and taking for a drive under load.

Well happy with this. Cost less than £100 for ends machined and alloy welding. Top job and saving of £500 on new cooler

Good man, well done. Just goes to show that RS ownership doesnt have to cost the earth.

Well done.
