Idle seems off

Post by irishmike » Thu Apr 16, 2015 7:14 pm

My RS4 seems a bit rough lately when idling, can slightly hear it in the cabin when stopped at lights.

Quick vid below, is this normal?

Can't really tell much from the vid, there's is a slight change in pitch, I don't think it is anything to be concerned about, have you checked the oil lately ? was the engine cold and just started, was it already warm ? Has it had a service recently or does it need one. Possible coil pack starting to degrade or possibly spark plug. Do you have any error codes. These would be things I would be looking at just to reassure myself

Was serviced 6 months ago, engine was warm. did about 5k miles since last service. Checked and she was low on oil all right, put in 1.5l and will keep an eye on it. Would it need a full oil change?

Will look on VCDS for some codes tomorrow

Im fairly new to these cars but that sounds very tappy compared to mine . A thing I used to do with my cosworth is stick a really cheap oil in for 50 miles off boost , then dump it out and stick good stuff in. the difference was unreal

Find out what grade oil they put in it and get it changed ASAP inc filter etc . The oil sounds to thin .

Will do. It was serviced in the Audi main dealer so I assume proper spec castrol was used..

Although saying that I went in for some top up oil and they gave me Quantum, the service guy said that's the oil they use when servicing...

What grade ? I also have a Mercedes vito and I used cheap Halfords oil in that once and it hunted and idled all over the place . I put the good stuff in and it went back to normal .

Most of the tapping noise seems to be coming from the fuel injector pumps either side of the rocker covers. Isn't that normal?

It definitely is a bit more tappy than it used to be and it is slightly rougher ticking over, now it's not a massive change, but it was always really smooth, now I can hear it wandering a small bit.

Must hook up VCDS tomorrow and give it a scan, it's due new brakes soon so may get them to give it an early service too while I;m at it.
