Parking censor failure?

Post by harding » Fri Feb 27, 2015 3:20 pm

Hey!
So i was probably the happiest man on earth today when i rolled out the RS4 for the first time after being stored during wintertime. Then all of a sudden when backing out of my parking spot the parking censor somehow malfunctioned (was working right before).
I got back into the parking spot to restart the car but this still happens:

Anyone had this problem before? What is it and what can i do?

edit: lol just noticed, dont mind the micropenis track on the nav

Yep, mine are the same. One of those jobs i've not got around to doing yet!

As far as i'm aware it means one (or more) of your parking sensors has failed.

Put the car in reverse with the engine of, then put your ear to each of the sensors and you should hear a small clicking sound if that sensor is working. Also heard of it being an issue with a speaker on the parcel shelf? Not sure about this one though.

I'm interested to hear responses too!

I've read on here mention of the sensors malfunctioning when moisture gets in and around them, and then fixing themselves again when dry. But that's unlikely if 'stored' you mean it's been in a dry garage.

Worth checking the fault codes. My RS6 did the same thing and turned out to be bad/corroded wiring and connectors. It's not always the sensors themselves.

Yep stored in a dry and warm garage. Then i took it outside for a drive and left it a few hours, then i drove into a warm garage to park again and the car condensated. Probably how moist shorted something.
I then had it in the garage yesterday so it dryed up, but the problem is still there...

yip regular problem these , I've changed 4 in 3 years and had the usual alarm tone again last week but not plugged in the VCDS yet as i,m away at work , but an easy fix for me as i know how to do the front and rears blindfolded now , its usually the sensor but may be wiring tho unlikely , apparently the failed one can be heard to be ticking when activated bt i have tried this and never heard anything so resort to VCDS and Ebay for new ones

The problem fixed itself! Took it for a drive today and all was fine again. Weird huh?
But thanks for your help!

I've had occasions where road dirt on the sensor triggers it or even water drops caught in the tiny ridge doing the same , i even once had it go off so i was going FFS not again and it was a sweetie paper stuck over one sensor due to the wet lol
