Try Bilt Hamber Surfex HD - I think its great stuff for engine bays. Have used Gunk before myself, but agree with you its not great and the Bilt Hamber stuff is much better.

I have used Autoglym engine degreaser in the past which was good but now opt for all purpose cleaner and a steam cleaner.

No issues, I try to stay away from electical items however, it doesn't soak parts as I keep it in minimum.

The guy who detailed my RS4 used a steam cleaner, and since then I've bought a Vax Grime Master hand-held jobbie (reconditioned version - about £25 offeBay). Brilliant at getting crap off without the smelly chemicals

I use steam cleaner and Meguiars APC diluted 4:1 - rinse carefully with open hose (No pressure washer + I usually bag the MAF housing to be safe) and then towel dry followed by a finish of 303 Aerospace Protectant. Spray and forget.

Another Bilt Hamber Surfex HD user here. For engine grime I dilute it 5:1 and for general purpose grime I dilute down to 10:1 - you can use it neat on real heavy stuff if needed. Then I dress the engine bay with CarPro Perl at a 3:1 dilution which once dried gives a nice new look and not too glossy.
Once you've done the hard work for the first time, it will be far easier to maintain thereafter needing just a damp microfibre wipe over and a re-dress once in a while. It comes up alright I think:

I use Auto Glym engine cleaner , and do every thing by hand. One clean I then go over it with Auto Glym runner care . Looks as good as new

Surfex hd is awesome stuff.
Or for a cheaper option get some Autosmart g101 and tardis
