School Boy Error

Post by Surrey Sam » Thu Jan 29, 2015 11:24 am

Sat in the local dealer getting the car MOT'd and my advisor comes out and says that he's really sorry but the car has failed the MOT on headlight washers. Don't worry though as you have MOT insurance, so if you have a while we can take a look and see if we can fix the problem today for you.

Then it dawned on me that I deactivated the hadlight washers earlier in the year as I hate the washer spray over bonnet. Fortunately I had my laptop with me and the VCDS cable in the glovebox. Two minutes later it was all operational again and the dealer passed it without doing a re-test. Only one advisory and that is my tyre foam is out of date. Job done.

So a 'post it' note is going into the history folder for next time :D

why would head light washers fail the MOT if they are INOP

quick check of the GOV MOT regulations do not mention head lamp washers

Can you even fail on what's basically an optional extra? I'm sorry but a failed MOT for a headlight washer is laughable given the thousands of sh!t heaps that are bumbling around UK roads. I'd best make sure I'm dressed smart when I take mine in...wouldn't want to fail due to my tie not being straight.

What makes my pee boil even more is the liberal interpretation dealerships apply to the MOT test when they're MOTing a used car that they're about to sell. Chassis held together by chewing gum = 12 months MOT.

I believe for Xenon lights you must have headlight washers & self-levelling to be road legal so I suspect this is the reason behind an MOT fail for this.

Yes, as far as I'm aware - if the car has Xenons and the mandataroy headlight wash/levelling sytem fitted, then they must be operable to pass an MOT. I didn't question the dealer for the exact wording as I was in agreement with the failure.

Unfortunately not Graeme; the advisor didn't get that far as he knows what I'm like and probably guessed I'd know the problem. I'm planning on going to the kent meet so if you're there I can have a quick VCDS scan and see if yours is also turned off?

Do they still offer the MOT cover? Southend Audi told me last year (August) that Audi UK stopped it so it's wasn't offered with my MOT.

You have to ask but they do still offer it and there are mileage/age limits + has to be serviced to schedule (specifically mentions doesn't have to be by Audi)
