Parrot mki9100 into B7 RS4 - I've got a ground hummmmmm.....

Post by ChrisW » Tue Jan 27, 2015 7:50 pm

Ok,

Ive had a guy fit a parrot mki9100 into my B7 RS4 with RNSE. Its one of the new kits with the blue box, thats all I know about the hardware. The guy who fitted it was very helpful, but I feel he may have bitten off a bit more than he can chew as he's left me with a car that makes a loud audible pop when the ignition is turned or when the key is removed, makes a loud humming noise when the ignition is off and the lights are on and makes a sound not too dissimilar to ED209 from Robocop when locked and unlocked. It also hums when speaking to someone using the handsfree kit that also changes in pitch with the revs. Other than that, the bluetooth audio is superb and its a neat piece of kit!

He's going to speak to auto leads to see if he can come up with a fix, he's not just buggering off and leaving me with it. In the meantime I thought i'd pop on here and see if there were any knowledgeable people who could offer some pointers.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Is it not just from where he has picked up his 12v supply from.

Do you mean the red wire that goes into the ignition?

Audis VWs Skoda etc all have issues with this.. ( As do most new cars)
I bet if he fitted it via a relay it would vanish.. Direct feed to battery.. Then ignition switching the realy.
My Poppa had a reversing camera fitted worked brilliantly until you actually had engine running. Canbus issues i think..
I re did it for him via a relay and it worked perfectly.
Hey also im no guru on this at all and waiting to get slated for my comment but hey if the dude who fitted knows his beans i thought he would have gone down this route straight away.
Hope it helps. And hope it makes it better maybe :) And hope somebody actually tells you what it might be..

Thanks for the input. There was a red wire going into the fuse box to the right of the steering wheel?

Right I asked the guy to e-mail me a description of how its fitted, this is his response:

---
Autoleads mute match lead behind the Stereo, which plugs in-line with the Parrot wiring and stereo.
The ignition comes from the fuse box. With key engaged you get +12Vacc, with ignition off you get +0.00V

The idea of the Mutch match box is to switch the stereo and amplifier down to earth, but keep the front speakers active for the hands free call.

For music streaming, you use a different part of the parrot chip.
---

Does anyone have any comments?? Really need help with this, the RS4 seems to be a bit of a hybrid in terms of audio equipment!

And in adding that he's probably created a ground loop since the Bose amp is behind the trim on the right hand side of the boot area.

Thanks Dave, what would be the solution? and what is the significance of the amp being in the boot?

If it has an earth connection at a different place on the car than the bose amp then there is a possibility of the 2 earth points being at a slightly different potential and thus create a ground loop which will sound just like you described. If one earth point is at the front of the car and the other at the rear this could increase the risk of a ground loop, or if he hasn't made a very good connection to earth.

Attenuate the audio output from the Parrot and wire it in properly to the phone input connections on the RNS-E - along with the mute signal out from the Parrot.

Any half-decent installer should know all that, it's basic stuff for any car electronics person.

All sorted, it was a dodgy wiring loom. Upgraded to a german one and it works a treat now.

Thanks
