Would it not be better to pay a professional to fully correct the paintwork, rather than use a product which is full of fillers to mask the problem?

Yes - but this will come with a considerable price attached. A decent correction will probably take at least a full day to do - often longer if you have some serious scratches to deal with. For lighter surface scratches filler based polishes are a very good way of achieving a better finish at a relatively low cost. Better still is get a decent DA polisher and some light polish and do it yourself for about £100 - £150. It's not hard to do but it is time consuming and you do need an eye for detail and it certainly doesn't hurt to get yourself some education on the correct method. Good preparation is really key or you can end up creating more scratches then you remove. Plenty of video on pootube or some time looking at detailing world can help here.
