Question

Post by toyneg » Fri Jan 16, 2015 1:05 pm

wanted some thoughts on this - my mate keeps babbling on to me that his £2k RX8 will out brake and out corner my beast. I'm unsure how they would compare and can't really find any data, obv he has the weight reduction in his favour. what ya think or will we have to settle this on the road?

I had an RX8 trying it a couple of weeks ago on a country lane, i dropped it into 3rd and blew him away, from what i could see he didn't have the confidence in the corners. I cannot see how an RX8 could outhandle the RS4, they are RWD and from what ive heard a bit tail happy, surley it cannot be a match for the big german quattro beast! :kissmyrings:

Maybe if the brakes and tyres are in good condition (and he has the ability and confidence to push it) but i doubt there'd be a lot in it. They're pathetically slow in a straight line though so cornering's about the only thing he can brag about. Such a shame they didn't offer the RX8 with a turbo like the RX7, that's the car I'd have, looks better too.

Rx8 specs
0-100kph 6.6
0-200kph 30.5
1/4 mile 14.5
Power to weight 163bhp/tonne
Curb weight 1400kg
Top gear tack time 1:31.80
Fith gear Anglesey track time 0:55.53
As your's has been modified, you're kicking out 431bhp weight is 1680kgs,so 256bhp/tonne,so unquestionably more powerful, but would the extra 280kgs make alot of difference under breaking & through the corners,im not sure, only real way to find out is get them boyh on a track,& do some timed laps.
Depends on the track as well, one with a few decent straights gives you an advantage, but a more technical track with more corners & shorter straights may give him the edge.
I did drive one a few years ago,a mate bought one from new, didn't rate it at all, wasn't very quick, but drank alot of fuel,he didnt own it for long, not the type of car that gets you excited.

Also the standard brakes on our cars are very capable bits of kit, they certainly bring me to a stop very quickly,id presume much better than the standard Rx8 brakes.

Not an RX8 but hey, best thing you can do with a 'WANK'el engine!!

I just love it when it's dying and about to go pop - the utter shrill of the thing in desperation as he bangs on the door!!! lmfao

Got my mrs an RX8 when they came out, nice car with great trim, stitched leathers, sat nav in metallic green, the doors love em or hate a novel idea

They handle very well on the country lanes and pretty quick too, most around today suffer with loss of compression which is the biggest reason for the non starters

Standing start you will eat him, mid range you can wave goodbye, top end you would have time to stick your jacksy out the window

Another of these reasons to go on the Santa pod "run what you brung day"

Are you still coming down tomorrow mate??

Stats I found showed RS4 braking from 100kph 35.5m vs rx8 36. From what I remember driving them I did think they had good brakes.
Peak lateral g .91 for the rs4 and .88 for the rx8.
But it depends what you mean by "handle better". The rs4 will have a lot of corner traction but the Rx8 will be potentially more adjustable and being that much lighter may flick easier.

Not even close.

From memory the top gear track time for the rs4 was about 1:25 (never shown on TV, but they made comments on other episodes about how it compared to other cars which pinned down the time - think there is an explanation on wikipedia's rs4 page)
