Tell them you are likely to be looking to replace the B7 at some stage this year, and have been looking at the new M3 as well as thinking about the B8. Wouldn't it make sense to kill two birds with one stone and take their forecourt on for a test drive and as the loaner. See what they say.

I wonder how much actual experience a main dealer has of building engines from scratch, rather than just swapping out pieces of kit like brakes and suspension etc

I'd imagine they actually do make tens of thousands of those blocks per year given they are in three or four different current models.
