So after 4 months

Post by Harris. » Mon Dec 29, 2014 8:21 pm

Of owning my B7 RS4 here's what I think ,all in my opinion of course .

I don't use the car everyday as I also have a Mercedes Vito . The RS4 is a great car but im starting to think why ??

Ive done 1 track day at Bedford auto drome which was a great day, but was getting my back side handed to me on a plate by a lot less power full cars .

Id like to up the Bhp and the very poor standard torque figure the car has but it seems to cost thousands to gain silly amounts of power .

Im going to give it a few more months to see if I can adjust to the car but so far I look at it as just a comfy car with a bit of noise

What have you done to improve yours ? Im not interested in the exhaust as there's no gain in anything but noise .

And no money isn't tight its just I could go and get a car for half the price which is faster !!!

miltek or similar is supposed to add 20-30hp isn't it? not a lot but on a N/A car it is expensive to add any real noticeable gain.

its the weight that really kill the rs4's performance nearly 2 ton isn't it?

The RS4 isn't about just speed. I think we all agree if you want a faster car the nyes you could easily get a faster car for your money. For me it's the looks, the speed, the handling, the comfort and the space. I don't have to compromise as I can still get the whole family in and go shopping or away for the weekend etc, and still have room for my amps and subs in the boot. I can't think of many other cars that would give me all of that; I had 3 cars when I bought the RS4 but now I'm down to just 1.
If you don't need all of those thengs and need more of 1 them more than the others then yes there are other cars i.e. if all out speed is more important than having back seats and a decent boot size, or if go-kart handling is more important than good handling that doesn't vibrate your dentures out then there are options.
For me it ticks all the boxes I need from my car; and boy does it still look good!! That's why I've struggled to repalce it.

Also, have you had it checked out? You could be suffering with a vac leak and are down on power? A qucik dyno run will reveal lots.

No chance. You might get close if you go for a full system with no cats though and remap etc.

You'd get more gain by using Shell V Power / Tesco Momentum than by putting on a Milltek cat back

Just seen your other post about getting 24mpg. Sounds like you aren't using the accelerator properly. When I'm having fun you won't even see 12mpg.

One of the best ways to improve power is to get rid of the pre-cats.
Then get a cold air feed to try and maintain the max power for as long as possbile and avoid heat soak.

Fair enough, their website says 10bhp but I expect that is slightly optimistic.

Glad I got rid of mine that came with the car, was far to loud for everyday driving. Would be nice if the sport button made It like that though

Many people have not noticed the drop in power immediately and thought their cars drove fine at first. Unless you have quarter miled it, 3rd gear test , dyno'd it etc then I'd still get it dyno'd just to be safe. I know a dyno run is not exactly accurate but it will tell you if your car is poorly than would appear to be healthy other than being too slow.
What sort of cars are passing you on the track? If it's some of these modern hot hatches then it's no surprise but if it's a less powerful or slower car then get it checked.

I was joining the motorway the other day and an ST came barrelling up behind me, I planted the throttle, red lined it up through the gears. He stayed with me up till I thought better of it and let off the throttle. But I certainly wouldn't swap the RS for a ST even if it was twice as fast.

Straight line at speed then fwd doesn't have any disadvantages and a lot less losses.

The rs4 isn't about going fast in a straight line. It's as above - it has a broad set of abilities. It really is a car to do everything.

Finally - to pull a car length during say 50-100 is actually bloody hard. Look at the mrc supercharged vs stock video. Start in third and isn't until 4th that it's pulled a car length or two.

If the ST or Megane were tuned you could have a problem. Equally the same could be said of you were caught in the wrong gear or have vac leaks, MAF issues, coked manifold, etc, etc. Those cars in stock form should not cause you any issues at all in straight line speed under normal circumstances. These cars are a lot quicker than people suggest they are but in order to stay like that, they require regular maintenance in terms of leak tests, etc. It was the same with the B5 RS4 too. The B7 really needs to be revved out though, same as the M3 and other high revving naturally aspirated cars. Can imagine in the dry on tight twisty roads the Megane or ST could stay with the B7 though, even in stock forms.

There is a supercharged B7 for sale on the other forum for £25k which would be worth a look. If it's for a fun car and you don't need four seats or a decent boot I'd be looking at a Caymen.
