If I wanted to fit some Audi/BBS Speedlines to my RS4 to replace the 9x19 ET 29s, what's the best setup to go for? I see they come in various widths and offsets...

Try and get as close to 9x19 ET29 as you can (or slightly lower ET, as a lot of guys run spacers). Simples.

I used to run 8.5x19ET48 on my A3.

I see they also come in 9x19ET33. What's the effect of the ET29 vs 33?

ET33 will be 4mm closer to the car so possible catch on the front brake calipers depending on spoke design. A 5mm spacer will make the ET28 which'll be 1mm further out than OEM wheels. 5mm spacers are not hubcentric though so I'd go for something like a 10mm spacer which will make them stick out 6mm more than OEM.
Or get wheels with ET20.

ET33 with 10mm would work fine, you'd probably be fine with 12mm (ET21) too as a lot of guys run 10mm spacers on the standard wheels. I just wasn't sure of the different options of actual wheel size. I had 8.5x19 ET48 on my S3 too, but that's not really relevant.

Here's nutter69's car with Speedlines. Are these 19s or 20s?

I have the 20s on mine... they have got custom adaptors and the wheels have been machined at the back.. also all the bolts and hardware have been made perfectly.. Vick had these wheels done for his RS4 and never fitted them.. they fit perfect

I don't know if he comes on here anymore but maybe he could shed some light..
