Front Disc Part Question..

Post by Wavey Dynamicist » Thu Dec 18, 2014 12:31 am

Done to death of course but search didn't help me.

Disc replacement is due. Amongst other options (Stoptech etc) i'm looking at getting some Phaeton discs and having some grooves machined in. Not a huge fan of drilled and would like to see what grooves can offer me.

So, the Phaeton discs are readily available. I have 2 questions

1. Can you buy the RS4 bell separately from the disc? Current ones looking a bit corroded and wouldn't mind getting fresh ones.

2. Anyone know any good and reputable machinists in the South East? I don't suspect it would need CNC to do the job.

Thanks.

Almost certain that the bell isn't available separately.

It's a black anodised milled aluminium component so any 'corrosion' should be superficial. I cleaned them up on mine with nout more than a plastic scouring pad (for pans), detergent and warm water and a bit of elbow grease - being aluminium I'd avoid being tempted to put any paint on. Bolts can get a bit of surface rust but will come up pretty well with a wire brush.

Was hoping that wouldn't be the case but can fully imagine..

Good point you raise though.. Didn't consider the material of the bells, they just looked a little rust coloured in places and i assumed it was corrosion but if they're aluminium it may well just be crap from the rotors deposited on there.. Wouldn't make sense to have a cast iron bell either!.. Provided the mounting holes aren't worn they'd be good for clean up and re-use.. Thanks,

tbf i think im going to get the plain disks and groove them if i dont go fit my 390 mm disks the drilled ones are always glogged up so pretty useless

the only think that will annoy my ocd is that they wont match the rears

can you get solid disks for the rears

Yeah I was contemplating Phaetons for mine originally but that was the biggest thing that bugged me, having odd front/rears.

Don't think there's a VAG alternative for a plain rear that fits, could be wrong.
