Drivers side seatbelt

Post by mustdash » Thu Dec 04, 2014 4:52 pm

MY drivers side seatbelt has stopped 'returning' - i.e. when I get out it stays loose on the seat (if that makes sense? It's the best way I can describe it!) - how easy is it to replace the return mechanism?
CURRENT: Montecarlo Blue Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifolglio, 2.9ltr bi-turbo, 510bhp
PREVIOUS: Volvo V60 Polestar, build number 149/700 worldwide - 3ltr straight 6 turbo. 350bhp remapped to 400bhp. Only one of 120 in the UK
PREVIOUS: Misano red B7 saloon, stage 2 map to 425bhp, manifold flap delete, KW V3 coilovers.

Mine are slow also - I've had all the b pillar trim off (unrelated) and it didn't work much better then - so I suspect a new seatbelt mech itself would be needed. I'll follow this thread with interest to see others experiences. Sorry I can't help more.

I'm just conscious that there is likely to be more to it than just replacing the mech. Seatbelt tensioners etc too.....

Are pre-tensioners not done on the buckle end? Most cars are. I suspect it's just the actual mech.

Alternatively, could try cleaning the belt:
Is the belt stuck or retracting very slowly?

My driver's belt was retracting at a maddeningly slow rate and I used the following fix:

+ Add some *powder* laundry detergent to hot water in a bucket
+ Get a box or towel to catch any splashing, and put the bucket on the seat
+ Pull the seatbelt all the way out, use a vice grip or similar to keep the belt from retracting, and then soak the belt for 15-20 minutes in the soap solution
+ Get some fresh hot water and detergent and repeat
+ Soak in just water to rinse
+ Dry the belt as much as possible with a towel and then let it air dry overnight

Problem fixed. You would be surprised how much gunk builds up on the belts over the years.

The previous owner changed the one on my car before I got it at about 85,000 miles.

Think it was about £250 for a silver one not including fitting!

Surprisingly I am not at all surprised at the ridiculous price....
