Exhaust drone??.

Post by kernowrs4 » Tue Nov 25, 2014 11:41 am

Morning all,

I am going to be picking up a milltek cat back non valved non resonated system soon but will also be gutting the pre-cats, it is not my daily driver so not entirely bothered but have read that people get a drone from 1800-2000 revs, can anyone tell me what the system is like from inside the car?

I.e how loud it is does it get annoying and so forth??

All help is much apreciated.

Thanks Dom

i have that exact set up and yes the drone at 1800-2000 revs is pretty loud but you can drive around it just by increasing the revs a bit. on normal motorway driving it is fine. I use mine as a daily and it hasn't really ever bothered me.

Toyneg did you have to just fit the two spacer to the pre-cat sensors and not the main cats aswell?

No one has actually clarified this on the forum, cheers.

Rocket1 sounds good to me mate, anyway i can help just say!

I have the milltek non res valved system and i get the drone at 1800-2000 revs. It is annoying but like toyneg said you can drive around it by pushing the revs up a touch.
Im actually thinking of gutting the pre-cats, ive heard you get more performance but not sure how much louder it will make it!
Upgrading the exhaust on an RS4 is a must though! :biggrin3:

sorry mate, no idea, AMD gutted the precats and MRC remapped the car, not really sure what they did with the sensors.

Exactly!

Had the car in today for a coil pack and it was driven around by the mechanic and it sounds perfect going by also :biggrin3:

If you want to know if you can drive round it then simply drive with mph = gear x 10 :)
so 20-30 in 2nd, 30 to 40 in 3rd...

If it doesn't suit you then you won't be able to drive around it :)

My £0.02 worth....

I "lived with" a non-res valved Milltek for nearly a year, but in the end the drone was just far to bad to live with. My driving style is that I use low down torque when pottering around town in traffic and I just couldn't do that with a non-res (valves open or closed) without making my ears hurt and the Bose AudioPilot drive the speakers so hard they started distorting.

So I switched to res centre pipes (I have the non-res centre pipes in my garage if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer), and now I can drive like I want to - low revs in town and hearing that V8 do 8000+ rpm when having fun.

BTW It's said a lot on AZ that Avants suffer more from drone than saloons - which fits with the work I did on active noise systems a few years ago when I learnt that the worst low frequency noise is excited resonance in the cabin, so the longer cabin in an Avant will make low rpm drone worse than in a saloon or cab.

All I would say is drive or be driven in a car like yours with a non-res before deciding, I didn't (but I did ask on here) and it ended up costing me £500+ extra to have the system swapped.

I have the resonated miles with gutted precats and the drone is bad enough in that... im pretty sure that i couldn't live with a non res day to day.... that said since fitting the charger the drone has almost vanished... An unexpected but pleasing byproduct lol :)

I'm not sure but am pretty sure they use spacers or relocate the O2 probes.

I have read many posts on non res drone. My point would be would you buy a race horse to pull a plough? As a pauper I have the standard exhaust but never, ever run it below 2k revs. I understand it will pull high load at low revs but I don't coz its my car. Even more so since I had the single mass flywheel. Just like others can drive theirs how they like :)

Now my work/family car I rarely rev above 2k but that's a 1.5 dCi.....

The main reason I drive my one at low revs around town is because it sounds bloody good (standard exhaust with the flaps always open).

Just the right amount of V8 burble and noise without it being too loud.
