Five years ago a local industrial estate was "cut off" by an icy road so my wife rang me asking me to come and get her and a colleague home - so I drove there, picked them up and drove them home - no fuss, no dramas ... and all on 275/30 Goodyear F1 summer tyres.

Always wondered how the RS4 would behave when the undertray scoops take in alot of high laid snow and compacts it all (apart from the obvious, melting ofcourse) only ask as mine fell off on the motoway when a small stone hit it, most probably ill fitted. Not sure how strong they are and whether they can take the compaction force

Yes really.

The usual advice of doing everything gently (it's often said drive like there is a fresh hens egg between your feet and the pedals...) still applies, and as has been said quattro helps gets you moving but does nothing for helping you stop. So I 100% agree that "take it easy" is good advice, but if you take care then you will be far less likely to get stuck than in most other cars on summer tyres.

Of course winter tyres will always be better, but they're not a cure all.

You can certainly get by and you'll be unlikely to get stuck in the UK snow on summer tyres with the four wheel drive. Winter tyres do make a big difference though particularly in the deeper snow in the alps or scotland. I have some smaller 245 18 inch winters on mine and they work well, they don't float and drift the same way the wider summer tyres do.
Drifting is fine at slow speeds but not if you want to stay in a straight line on the open road.

totally agree with dave! I had a 5 series before my rs and for 4 yrs I had no issues at all with snow, its all about how you drive a car and as I drive for a living I see to many idiots who couldn't drive a shopping trolley nevermind a car.yes I agree that winter tyres are the safest option in winter but with 4wd I don't think its a must.mind you if you only got 3mm of tread on your boot then that's a different story haha

I don't really think it's worth spending hundreds of £££ on a set of winter tyres. We have excellent Quattro systems and as long as you don't drive like a spanner we should all be ok! Save the money and use for engine upgrades and louder exhausts!

Is it loads of money though? Been thinking about it and actually, it's just the cost of fittings and the pain having a set of tyres in the corner of the garage.

What's a good price to swap tyres? £60? It's not like I can't stick 4 tyres in the boot!

I guess the best option would be to have a spare set of 18's with fat winter tyres on but how bad will the winter be here? And how long will it last! A few inches of snow won't hurt anyone! Hopefully!

£60 is about right (£15 a corner).

Also people often forget that we're actually talking about winter tyres, not snow tyres. Anything under 7 degrees and they'll out perform a summer tyre.
