Brake feel

Post by gt2 » Thu Oct 30, 2014 7:11 pm

Does anyone here have a high initial bite? I recently drove a hire car and the bite on the brakes was almost instant. On the RS they seem to do little until I start giving them a decent amount of pressure. Is this just mine or are others the same? I should mention I've recently had new pads all round and a brake service done so all should be well......in theory.

I actually like the typical non audi immediate grab on the b7. it's progressive and firm. Always been like that on mine through 26k on the brakes.

Is it meant to be this way? It does give you a lot of control and it's always been that way, I just assumed a brake fluid service would give it a high initial bite as per most other cars....

the brake pads could be seizing up in the calipers ,they sit on top of a steel slider and dust ,crud etc can cause them to stick so when you press it they are resisting the pressure , mine were like that and i had to get them out with a hammer and screwdriver ,, all cleaned up and new pads in and the difference was very noticable , you may also have cheap aftermarket pads fitted , do you know which pads are fitted to yours ? a brake fluid change may help too. Pump the pedal with the engine off until it goes hard , if it still feels a bit spongy a fluid change may help .

It had ferodo premiers fitted all round and a fluid change a few weeks ago. From memory there's still a bit of give even when the peddles pumped. I'm just wondering if it was bled properly. I've a mate with an rs4, I'm going to have a drive in his next week before I start messing with anything. I assume yours has a high initial bite then?

I might pop the pads out and check the sliders then. Cheers

The exact thing happened to me when i drove a rental in the US - a toyota if i remember correctly. The brakes on the toyota was really really instant and i almost smacked my head against the steering wheel. When i got home i drove to audi to get my brakes tested out by the RS mechanic and he said that they are supposed to be this way. 90.000km and do not need to change pads yet! :boohoo: :biggrin3:

Mine are the same. I'm sure its supposed to be this way. I've recently refurbed my calipers, changed the fluid, and have yellow stuffs and they are still like it. I don't mind, and find them very progressive. I'd rather feel that the braking gets better the harder I press than the other way round !!

I thought this is how they were supposed to be too.

For me this was one the best things about the B7 RS4 compared to the B6 S4s , B6 TDi and 8L S3 I had before, they all had typical Audi "instant bite" which made them very difficult to slow down with any finesse.

The much more progressive feel of the B7 RS4 brake pedal is something I noticed on the test drive back in February 2006 and has always been the same on my RS4 even after 2 pad changes and 1 disc change.
