Wheel Refurb and TPMS Sensors??

Post by aled_31 » Sun Oct 12, 2014 9:34 am

I'm looking to get my wheels refurbed. The company that I'm going to use plans to strip to bare metal and powder coat. Obviously this will mean that they will have to remove the TPMS sensors inside the wheels. They've assured me that there will be no probs or issues, but thought that I'd check before booking in.

For those of you who have had similar refurbs, did this process go smoothly, or is there a chance that replacement TPMS sensors will be required and need coding back to the car??

Thanks.

Personally i would just put new sensors in, if they are originals they maybe at the end of their life anyway.

This is the guy I got mine from, he will take £35 a sensor if you put an offer in

When I had mine done a few years ago some of the valves were rusty and had to be replaced (not the actual sensor, the other bit). But the coat is right, if the sensors are the originals their batteries will be dead soon.

Great stuff, cheers for the advice guys. £140 is pretty reasonable for a new set. Once replaced, do they need coding to the car with VAG-COM, or is it just a case of "store pressures", Job Done??

Thanks.

This.

as the others have said, if they're still OE sensors in there then it's probably worth doing now, especially if you plan to keep the car for a while. If you can get a full set for £140 then go for it, because a dealer would stiff you for the best part of £100 for each one...

having said that though, there's absolutely no need to replace a sensor (with decent battery life left in it) when having a wheel refurbed / tyre replaced - it's not uncommon for the valve part to need replacing if it's corroded or the thread is knackered, which is just £10 or so, but the sensor (the larger dark grey plastic bit in the photo in the ebay link) is completely separate and just bolts on / off from inside the wheel

I had my rims refurbed a couple of years ago when I bought the car but didn't change the sensors just the valves, which were a bit corroded. The sensors have been fine since, so I wonder whether they'd been changed before I bought the car.

However, as above, I'd be inclined to change them now, especially at that price and as you're refurbing.

There's no need to have them coded back in .I just did wheel change on dash and restored tire pressure not looked back

I just fitted some new ones fitted when I had a tyre swap as I had one that was failing anyway.

It's just as well I got new ones as one was so badly corroded it needed drilling out! All that was required to get them back registered with the car was "wheel change" on the dash. No coding required :) Fairly sure I paid £100 for a full set of genuine audi items (from someone in Poland or something) on eBay but I bought them a while ago now.

Does anyone know if there's any problem fitting these to lower profile tyres? I assume there's no problem with clearance? I have 255/30/20 fitted instead of the standard 255/35/30

Absolutely wont be a problem. the TPMS sits inside the rim - even if you had 0 profile tyres they'd still be ok.

Having seen that photo I think I'd better check with the manufacturer before purchasing some new tpms. They may not fit at all.....

That's a random photo from the interwebz - not an audi wheel etc.

Hi, I recently had my wheels powder coated and one of the valves was drilled out and replaced. The valve is now no longer the metal type and I have the dash warning light come up every 5 miles or so (despite my efforts to reset etc.). The wheel refurbisher are willing to replace with a new sensor, but (I presume) not OEM.

Has anyone on here had experience with fitting non original sensors? As far as I can work out they just need to be 433MHz, perhaps similar to this:

BTW, my Audi dealer quoted £264 for replacing one sensor...
