MRC mods - 2 years on...

Post by AdrianD » Tue Sep 30, 2014 9:28 pm

So it's been 2 years since my RS received the works from MRC... I had the usual cold air feed, de-coke, stage 2 manifold, custom map, gutted pre cats and a miltek... cost a bleeding fortune.. it went in with 387 bhp and came out with a reported 438bhp... a healthy increase, however... dare i say it, i never actually felt any performance increase at all on the road and to this day feel like i wasted my money... i know, i know... controversial..

So 2 years on but only a few extra miles put on the clock and it's in at QSTuning for it's supercharger to be fitted... it has a test run on their rolling road and produces... wait for it... 384bhp... 3 bhp down from before it went into MRC 9000 miles ago... Go figure... Now i know all Rolling roads produce different results however both of these are respected within the industry, are they THAT far out? Can 9000 miles really coke it up to loose THAT much power as other than that it's perfectly healthy?

Has anybody had a dyno run at another tuners, recorded the results, given the car to MRC or somebody else similar who specialises, had it tweaked and then gone back to the original dyno?
Just a thought.

It will be interesting to see what you think of the service from QST, Kim to me seems very good, what charger have you gone for??

Don't think anyone has the bottle to go from MRC direct to another set of rollers Just incase they loose 20hp on the way there..

Seems so easy to spend a pile of cash and let a print-out justify the outlay. Not having a pop and MRC or anybody but the tweaks have to show a return for the punter. The tuning shop will always show an increase, won't it?

So far i'm very pleased with Kim and his staff, i've gone for the Whipple 140AX Supercharger, the same one he has in his own RS5 however this is the first UK B7 RS4 to have one fitted... eeek!

This will be interesting then as it's the same kit I'm up for going for early next year, guess I can have a look at ADI ?

when i had my work done by mrc i 100% felt a difference. i made an extra 70ps according to the chart, did i really pick up 70ps? who knows.....it was definitely faster than it was but its only numbers on a piece of paper.

whos dyno do you trust?... there is as much chance qst are underrating the numbers on your car now so there is a more impressive delta when you get your new shinny whipple dyno graph as there is mrc overrating your old numbers.
for the record im not suggesting either company are at it...

I took mine to MRC for the usual work. No pre work figures as they had a lot of work to squeeze in that day. No decoke for me though. It finished at 403ps. A year later I was at the AmD rolling road day and got the almost identical numbers. There were other similar stories too. And I think graeme got the manufacturers quoted number for his B8 at AmD. So that to me shows that the numbers at MRC and AmD are pretty much in line with each other.
However, I have seen many people on here report of the carbon build up again just a few thousands miles after having it cleaned. So I think the reason you have seen the drop back down to pre mod figures is the carbon build up again. Get it cleaned and you will see those bigger numbers again. But be warned, it'll be coked up again before you know it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, unless you plan on regular decoking it's just a waste of time and money. I see lots of cars being advertised for sale stating they had a decoke 20k miles ago or 2 years ago like as if to say they are now cured of the problem but they might as well of never had it as after 20k miles it'll be just as bad as one that's never been done.

I've done the same but When considering gains vs cost I'm not sure I'd do it all again

Has anyone done an "on the road" power test before and after a clean?

My guess is that there are far too many factors involved to do any comparison. I bet if you returned the next day to MRC you would get different figures, maybe not substantially, but different I bet.

Oh yea for sure, I was more thinking of getting the delta between the two from some on road numbers.

would be quite intrigued what mine puts out now - had mine done a year ago at MRC this month but i have done 20k miles in mine since. it isnt something i would pay out for again i don't think, would rather upgrade the brakes :)
